Anyone find \"mastodon\" bones on their land?

I was out working on the snow trac and came in for lunch and glanced at the newspaper. Not too far from where I live an excavator was doing a pond project and apparently dug up bones from several mastadons! The Indiana State Museum came out to the site and figured out they are well over 10,000 years old.

I'm pretty bummed out, the only thing I even find on my land are old strands of barb wire, and I usually find them with my finish mower blades /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Interesting story there Bob! But I'm just like you, when they dug our pond all they found was rocks and mud neither of which are worth much at eBay these days.

i sometimes find civil war stuff around my house. it's pretty cool. growing up, about 10 miles east of where I live now, we used to find piles of stones which used to represent stone houses/foundations. lots of goodies in there. bottles, civil war stars, etc. all gone now. Where I grew up is now a neighborhood with McMansions. ICK. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

i forgot, found lots of real 'indian warheads' when I was a kid... i grew up in a very active area... (civilization wise...)

the BLM closed off 2400 acres of land just 500' from my house due to "mastadon bones". They do not allow any vehicles in that area now. I am sure they would close my land to me if they could (maybe a new supreme court decision?). Anyway....its always interesting when I go digging with the tractor...never sure whether I'm finding cattle/sheep (old basque country) or dinosaurs. Whatever I'm finding...the dog sure loves them! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No bones, but I did dig up an old Heinz (catsup/ketchup?) bottle with the dozer while enlarging our pond. An old bottle is not unique but this bottle has the imperfections in the glass, a different shape and a glass stopper with 57 embossed on it. I have never seen a condiment bottle with a glass stopper before. It somehow survived the dozer, intact, with the stopper and is now in the wifes display cabinet.

I did excavate a couple of Firestone tires last year but I've been unable to date them. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

It is not uncommon to hear of mammoth bones / teeth found in my area. Last year, the pit we get a lot of material from found some teeth and I think a leg bone. It made the paper but nobody shut down the pit.

A couple months ago, there was a news story about a couple that found an arrow head in their backyard. It was so transluscent it looked almost like plastic. They had it examined by an archiologist and it turned out to be a Clovis Point. They said they would allow their yard to be excavted.
