Anyone ever "delete" the dpf on a tractor?

A few things. It’s fairly easy to remove the DPF system. Anyone that can do exhaust can do it. The problem is what will the computer on the tractor do? I don’t know the answer for this. On popular diesel pickups they made kits for ”off-road” use that would delete the EGR, SCR, and DPF systems and then add a tuner or chip so the truck would not throw codes and run correctly. Obviously this stuff is used on the street and hence the EPA crackdowns.

Second point is the power improvement chips or programmers. Some are legal. They mainly change the power curve by changing the boost, fuel and timing events. I had edge chip on an 04 Cummins I had and it definitely made a difference. Part throttle I couldn’t really tell it was there. These power improvers are the things that may or may not harm an engine short or long term. Then you have the transmission and drivetrain that are going to take a beating.

Im not a fan of emissions equipment either, the expense and maintenance. I kind of look at diesel emissions today being where we were in the early 1980’s on gas engines. The stuff works but isn’t anywhere near a 100% reliable. These days do you even sweat the emissions equipment on gas engines. Do we really want to go backwards on air quality?

A guy that I bought hay from last year deleted one of his tractors and then had it tuned for more HP. My memory isn't accurate, so I'm sort of fudging this, but I think he said that he had a 90 HP Massey tractor that was bogging down while haying. He also said that he had a bunch of issues with the emissions. It was to the point that Massey had sent out a team to look at it and figure out the solution. They never got it right, so when his warrantee expired, he hired a guy from the DFW area to do the delete and increase the HP. I think he said the cost was around $3,000, and he was able to get well over 100 HP out of the tractor. The difference was night and day, and since doing it, he hasn't had any more issues with the tractor.

That happens more often than a lot of people realize and I applaud the guy for doing what he needed to do to get his tractor running properly, no need for a working man to keep throwing good money after bad on a problem that has no end in sight, until he solved it for himself.

Guys order “glider kits” (new truck chassis with no engine or transmission) and install pre-emissions drivetrain in it.
If a tractor, I’d buy the lowest hour, pre emissions tractor I could and restore it and still be way ahead on money.
Which is what I’ve actually done.

Think the Glider Kit loop hole is closing. Also, believe that California has/is making it illegal to operate pre-emissions commercial vehicles.

I think your explanation makes sense. I suspect the problems occur from aggressive power levels that are used continuously.

Too much heat. I tuned a 5.9 and 6.7, tuner would shut down engine rpm if exhaust temps went too high. That is how I set the tuner. YMMV

Actually it already has. You cannot title a glider with a pre emissions engine anymore for on road use.

The friends and family I know who put aggressive chips in their diesel trucks have experienced engine problems. Is that everyone? Of course not. My neighbor is general manager of a Dodge (Ram) dealership. He’s told me that this damage is not uncommon for chipped trucks. Does that mean every truck? No. And that’s not what I said.

Cummins trucks don’t need chips. Once you tow heavy with one, you understand what real torque at low RPM is.

As we were talking he said "You know I can 'delete' that tractor for you. This guy owns a well-known and highly respected shop, and works mainly on large trucks, and lots of them

I'm wondering if anyone else has attempted to "delete" a tractor, and what were the results.
