I have an '08 550 with a 6.4L diesel. Mine has been problematic. Luckily, warranty caught most repairs or I'd be out $3,000+. I only have 52,000 mi on truck. Warranty is nearing expiration (June 2013). Dealer wants 4 grand to extend drivetrain warranty. have already replaced injectors, injector harnesses, LP fuel pump, radiator hoses and a few other things.
Rest of the truck is OK, but engine makes me very nervous. Just got another "check engine" light yesterday. Going to dealer for scan to see what it is this time.
Has anyone had any experience with the 6.4L? Did you extend warranty?
I bought an '08 to jump over the 6L, which I heard was worse, but now this 6.4L has me thinking. I can't believe these problems are still plaguing Ford.
hear the latest Ford diesel is better, but really don't want to buy a new truck.

Problematic engine.

Try a Cummins.

Or Duramax.

Both are available in similar capacities.

The 6.4 was an interim motor built by Navistar to meet the EPA emission requirements. I've had a 1989, 1995, 2000, 2007 and 2011 Ford F350's with diesel motors.

The 6.0 liter 2007 was totally reliable as Navistar + Ford finally worked out all of the problems with that motor. The 6.4 liter was a step backward as Ford had the 6.7 liter in development and Navistar didn't care to support Ford on the 6.4 liter because they knew that after 2010, Ford was no longer going to use Navistar motors.

The 6.7 liter Ford diesel is a really good motor - the best I've had in the list of vehicles I've owned.

The 6.4 was one and is one of the strongest motors ford has ever put in one of their trucks.
The BS emissions is what is creating all the problems with the engine.
If you want it to last you need to get a hold of Spartan Diesel Technologies
I would spend my money on a tuner and a dpf delete before I would buy the extended warranty.

After Nov my 6.4 will be out of warranty and I am going to Sparten it.
There is a lot of discussion over on the ford truck forums about this topic.

I could not agree more. I have a friend who has a 6.4 F350 and once he did some deleates its a awsome truck. It gained 3mpg also.

As for other branda, the Cumnins and Dmax are both good motors but that is where it ends. The rest of the truck falls well short if the Ford.

I agree with DP for the most part. I had 2 of the "dreaded" 6.0 motors, an 04 and 06 F250. No problems. I unloaded both because, being a rather practical person, did not need that level of power anymore as farming operations were being scaled down. I did not care much for the steering "wobble" of the 06 (4x4) but it was a very confortable truck (Lariat). The 04 was 2wd and rode nice. Several farmers in my area have dmaxs and cummins. A lot of them switched due to issues with the 6.0 and 6.4 engines. From the ones I see on a regualr basis, they really like the dmax/cummins.

My friend owns a landscaping company and has a 6.4 f-450. He hasn't had any problems but the fuel economy was quite bad. When the warranty ran out he tuned it and removed all the restrictive junk and MAN will that thing pull now!!!! Super strong engine and gets very good mpg now according to him. That truck works everyday of its life with no complaints. He's scared of the 6.7 like many of you are of the 6.0 and 6.4.lol

I agree and I have a GM with a Duramamx diesel, but GM is no longer available in "similar capacities".
I'd be driving a used 5500 4x4, but it won't fit in my garage.
Couldn't find a Dodge in my price range.

Once you do the "deleates", the truck no longer meets EPA standards. This is a commercial towing vehicle subject to roadside inspection.
I wonder if the manufacturer of the deleates includes an explanation letter for the state police as to where the federally mandated pollution control system went and a blank check for the $3,000 fine?

I'm all for improving reliability for an unreliable Ford engine, but I'm too old and have too much to lose to break the law.
