Was wondering if a 3616 is powerful enough to run a square baler. Or a 5' brush hog. Not sure what it takes. Thanks Andy

Thanks AB , I was just thinking of a small square baler in the future.

I agree, your tractor can handle a 5' brush-hog. A 6' might be a little much, if you're cutting heavy growth.

On the baler issue, it's probably under-powered. The JD website shows that their smallest square baler requires a minimum of 35 hp at the pto. JD 328 baler
And, remember that "minimum" is just what it says. For my 457 round baler, minimum hp is 55 at the pto. My 5085M has 70, and it's not too much. Makes me wish I had a few more hp.

Thanks BF62 , good to know about the JD baler , I have to look into that. I will check the NH site and see if they have specs on there also. I figured the brushhog would run OK as i run it now with my 30 Ferguson and most of my heavy stuff has been long since cleared. The new one (if I ever decide) will only have to cut weeds. or 2 year growth at the most. Thanks Andy

You're down a little on pto hp for a small square baler like my Massey Ferguson 124 (two-twine, small squares) that has a recommended 35 hp (min). But your tractor would handle my 124 without much problem. Here it is behind my Mahindra 5525

Balers this size have been operated with much smaller tractors, like the Farmall Super A in this video that has less than 20 hp (pto)

(the baler segment starts around 6 minutes into the video).

Good luck.

Would it run a baler? Probably in light conditions. Should it run a baler? No
You couldn't pay me to put a square baler behind one on any kind of a hill. With all the weight and swaying of the baler from the plunger and flywheel you would be in for a ride. The compact tractor powertrain was not built to handle that. Folks did it with 30hp, but the tractors were much sturdier and built to handle the baler way back when.

Thanks Flusher and Jwc, I was just thinking out loud on the baler, I had my place for 22 years and never baled it , I doubt if I would ever actually put out the money for all the necessary equip. especially if I buy the new tractor! Thanks again. Andy
