Winches Anybody want to donate a winch?

Your winch, being hydraulic, makes things interesting. So did you run hydraulic lines all the way to the rear bumper of your pickup? I see no reason you couldn't mount that winch to the trailer and then make some hose extensions to get to the hydraulics at the rear receiver. That was my plan with the electrical version of a winch. Three mounts-front,rear,and trailer. I went to HF and forgot to look for winches, doh! I was on a hunt for replacement zerc fittings.

I removed the old hydraulic filter mount and it was really pretty easy. Should get the new one on this week.

Yes, the winch has a seperate manifold under the hood with seperate hoses to front and rear.

I woud not want to mount it on the trailer - need it on the 4WD, plus it could tear the trailer apart. I suppose you could have a receiver hitch welded to the trailer, get some quick connect hose extensions, and temporarily mount it on the trailer, and be VERY careful with the power!

Thought I would post an update but unfortunately no pics. The broken filter mount was backordered and anyone who has been through the backorder process from Kioti should know that this possibly means never. So I called Jon at Depratt and he got one to me as fast as UPS could move it from his in-store stock. For a part that is supposed to withstand 2500+ psi, the filter mount uses only O-rings and push in connections. There is only one threaded mount for the line to the HST tranny.

The part was easily removed with simple hand tools. The new part goes in very easily but there is a trick. Be sure to start the retainer bolt on the top that holds the filter mount to the bracket. The bracket has a slot that you slide the started bolt into. It is very difficult to align that bolt after the filter mount is in place if you don't do it this way.

I put it all together, added UTF fluid to the fill mark and started up the tractor. It took a little bit of time to get hydro fluid to all the empty cylinders but nothing leaked. I only needed to add about a gallon of UTF which is important since it means that of the 7 gallons in the tractor's sump, only one gallon is actually above the intake for the hydro. I think. At least you all should know not to run the sump low at all since only slightly low fluid levels will starve the pump.

In the first 8 hours since getting the machine working I have already put a small dent in the bottom of the new hydro filter. Doh! I should have ordered two filter mounts.

Thanks for all your help.

Thanks Highbeam for the install trick. There might be more of us, but I hope not, who will have to replace the mount. My filter has a few small dents but I guess I haven't smacked it hard enough to break the mount....yet. ;)
Still working on a protector cage just for the filter. Have a few ideas but need to finish the honey do list. :)

As promised, the rest of the story with pics!

Pic #3 is a trailer deck view of my winching setup. This manual winching is work. Note how when you are winching that you are very much in harms way if a chain or cable were to break. I reset the winch three times as I ran out of cable and needed to take another bite.

Did you use the come along with a single line pull? I can't tell for sure, but it looks like it in the picture. If so, I would recommend two pullies and hooks so that you can double the line pull. You have to operate the come along with twice as many strokes but each stroke is half as hard. Much less fatigue on the operator.

Remember, one pulley does nothing but change the angle of the pulling cable. The second pulley adds the mechanical advantage.;) A long time ago I use to do a bit of off roading in an old Toyota Landcruiser. The few times I managed to get bogged down in mud, the come along with a couple pulleys and hooks really go me out without too much trouble.

Yes, a plain 2 ton comealong hooked directly to the tractor via a G70 chain. Each pull of the comealong was pretty heavy but as it was I had to reset the line three times and with only one winch that means I had to hard anchor the second chain, set the pbrake, and then loosen the winch and reset. That took lots of time and night was approaching.

I also didn't have a snatch block to use as a second pulley, really fortunate to have a comealong.

It would only take one pulley to halve the force required but double the length of pull. With two pullies I could have done a 3:1. My wife could have done it if she had enough time.

I won't soon forget the hand winch experience.

One pulley depends on where you put it. Me, being a dummy, would attach the hook to your tractor, the pulley to your trailer and anchor the come along somewhere else. That yeilds no mechanical advantage, just a re-direct of the cable angle... and believe me... I've done that! And then I think, man, these pulleys aren't all they're cracked up to be. Kinda like this

So then I'd anchor the hook to the trailer, the pulley to the tractor and the come along to the trailer and gain a 2:1 advantage. Hey, that's much better.
Like this.
