I have a 10,500 Milemarker hdrauic winch which runs off the power steering pump. It is attached to a special plate which mounts to a receiver hitch either on the HD front bumper, or can be moved to the rear receiver (anther set of plumbing). This is one powerful winch and runs as long as the engine does.
I have never figured out a way to winch something onto a trailer attached to the rear hitch. I cant see a way to reverse the pull of the front with or without a snatch block without friction against truck underbody and who knows what damage to truck or cable. A stout high tree in front of the truck would do it, but not many out here in the desert.
I have thought about mounting the trailer to an extra receiver hitch I have on the front bumper (normally used for a cargo carrier); it would raise the trailer tongue up very high, but I could get a straight pull. (I don't think one culd leave the trailer unsecured fr this kind of operation - i.e. on the jack, wheels blocked but not secured to anything solid: opinions?
The tractor weight might bend the trailer tongue if hiched high to the front bumper unless it was well blocked. To disconnec, I'd pull the pin, and back off the tongue, leaving it hanging (temporarily), or unscrew the ball.
One day I'll have to try this - with someone else's trailer.
Come-alongs ae great tools for all kinds of things: I got my GMG of the edge of a earthen dam once, and the come-along just folded on me (as it is supposed to do if overloaded). Always get one 4 tiimes the anticipated loadQ
When my LB 1914 arrives, I'm going to have to mount a large tool box, somewhere.
