I got so thirsty that I actually drank the water from the wash jug. That water in a half gallon reused jug that I use to rinse the mud off of myself and out of my eyes before I come home so that I don't scare the kids when I arrive. It bounces around in the bed of the truck and gets all hot and icky.
You loaded that tractor on the trailer, by yourself, with nothing but a come-along? It's amazing you weren't sucking water out of mudpuddles!:D

Wow, heck of story. I can hear the creakin' and grindin' of that come-a-long all the way over here in NY. Haven't loaded a dead tractor but sure have tested the limits (can you say severely overloaded) of a few cables, blocks and ropes over the years. Still makes me wince every time. Come-a-longs are a great tool when you need 'em, but boy it would be nice to have a good strong winch WITH a remote in situation like that. Good job gettin' 'er done!

Bet you put a larger cooler in your rig next time.:)

I have same problem on M/F GC2310. The filter is attached to rearaxle and is mounted horizontally, but tractor has low ground clearance. There are a few people including my neighbor who have tore their filters off. The newer GC2310 are suppose to have filter guards in place. If you have skid plates or guard ideas, I'd be interested. I run turf tires and I understand ag tires give more height to tractor. plowking

Joe,
Next time you get to Harbor Freight pick yourself up a 9000# winch for that trailer. They are only about $350 currently on sale, plus the cost of a battery and a little wiring on your part for a battery charge lead from the truck. I bought one for each of mine a while ago when they were on sale. Running the cable through a snatch block pulley will effectively double your pulling capacity. I haven't had to load a dead tractor yet but have loaded several dead cars, trucks, and a D20 dozer with mine. Also winched a small excavator out of a mud hole. I still have my come a longs just in case but don't have to break a sweat with the winches. I've posted pics of mine before in the Mahindra section.

Ooooh, yes it is an 8000 lb winch for 350$. Comes with 95 feet of 5/16 cable and a 12 foot lead on a remote. It appears to have a mount plate and a non-roller fairlead. I would really like to be able to use a warn type cradle to use the winch in a receiver hole in the pickup front or back. That winch is only supposed to draw 37.5 amps so no really huge wiring is needed. Boy that would have been nice on that late Friday night.

The 9000 lb model is 450$.

This is the second dead vehicle to be winched by hand up onto my trailer. The last one was a 1965 pontiac station wagon that I hauled for a coworker.

Joe,
Double check your HF flyer. The one I just got lists the 9K lot#93752 for $349.99 and comes with 100' of 3/8" aircraft cable and it does come with a mount plate. You could easily adapt / weld on a 2x2 square so you could plug it into your receiver on the truck. Sale ends Sept. 11th but I know it would be on sale for that price again. I think the 8K has been selling for $299.99 too.

Thanks George, I was looking at their website and not the flyer. Not sure I need 9000 over 8000 but I like the 3/8 vs 5/16" cable and perhaps there are some other improvements. Sheesh, 300$ for an 8000# winch is very good. Any complaints on these winches? I saw a name brand, milemarker or superwinch, 8000# winch for 389 with free shipping at one of the online retailer sites. There used to be a brand of winch that was T something like Trex that was also quite inexpensive.

Re: the winch
For my uses and only $50 more, I opted for the 9K winches with 3/8" cable. I have dragged many cars, trucks, and small dozers up onto my trailers using the snatch block pulley and hook with a set of AW direct vehicle retrieval hooks. The snatch block pulley reduces the single line pull stresses on the winch. A friend of mine has the 8K winch (which also came w/ 3/8" cable) and has hauled twice as many vehicles as I have without problems. The name on mine is REW 9000, has 3/8" x 100' of aircraft cable, free spooling, automatic load holding brake, 3 stage planetary gear system, power in and out, remote hand control w/ 12' of cable and weighs 79.7 lbs.
There are a lot of people who don't like HF tools / equipment (including myself) but I think any homeower who has a need for a winch around the house and uses it properly will get many years of service out of it.

I have a 10,500 Milemarker hdrauic winch which runs off the power steering pump. It is attached to a special plate which mounts to a receiver hitch either on the HD front bumper, or can be moved to the rear receiver (anther set of plumbing). This is one powerful winch and runs as long as the engine does.

I have never figured out a way to winch something onto a trailer attached to the rear hitch. I cant see a way to reverse the pull of the front with or without a snatch block without friction against truck underbody and who knows what damage to truck or cable. A stout high tree in front of the truck would do it, but not many out here in the desert.

I have thought about mounting the trailer to an extra receiver hitch I have on the front bumper (normally used for a cargo carrier); it would raise the trailer tongue up very high, but I could get a straight pull. (I don't think one culd leave the trailer unsecured fr this kind of operation - i.e. on the jack, wheels blocked but not secured to anything solid: opinions?

The tractor weight might bend the trailer tongue if hiched high to the front bumper unless it was well blocked. To disconnec, I'd pull the pin, and back off the tongue, leaving it hanging (temporarily), or unscrew the ball.

One day I'll have to try this - with someone else's trailer.

Come-alongs ae great tools for all kinds of things: I got my GMG of the edge of a earthen dam once, and the come-along just folded on me (as it is supposed to do if overloaded). Always get one 4 tiimes the anticipated loadQ

When my LB 1914 arrives, I'm going to have to mount a large tool box, somewhere.
