I am considering trading my 4340C for a little more HP .... Here's what I am finding ... NOT ONE Montana dealer willing to even quote me a price difference...they simply want me to buy a new one!!

Whats with that????

Hmmm, what IS it about dealers that they would NOT want to replace a NEW tractor on their lot with a smaller USED tractor ?

Maybe they would rather replace that new tractor on the lot with another new one.
Maybe even a NEW'er one, say a 2010 model vs a 2009 (or '08) one ?

Yeah, I'd bet thats it; They just wanna be Noooooo tractor sales dudes, not a used tractor sales lot.

Just a guess on my part and I have no idea if this holds true for your dealer, but aren't most dealers in all reality fairly small outfits? They don't really have the money setting around to have setting around in a used tractor.:( This applies to a lot of dealers and not just Montana dealers. For them to give you a trade in amount, it most likely would have to be pretty low and that would make you unhappy also. Unless your dealer moves a lot of tractors, it would be hard to move a good used machine for much money. People would rather buy new when the price is about the same and then throw in financing and the new tractor is actually less money.

That is most likely why no one will give you a trade in value, and with the economy the way that it is and all.

Just my opinion

Awfully harsh LB. 1*Why does a fine tractor like that have "no trade in value"?
John
1*If the dealer won't deal with him on it then there is no trade in available which in turn equals no trade in value.

2*LB, why no trade in value? Is it because it isn't a Kubota BX?:rolleyes:

3*Could very well be the case.

It looks like a nice tractor... however, these days it can be tough to compete with financing offers made by mfrs to sell new equipment. I'd put an ad in your local paper and sell it outright. You'll generally do a bit better than trade-in (the dealer simply must offer lower than retail since he's taking on the risk of resale. After all, they need to be profitable). While you're waiting for it to sell, pick out the replacement. Good luck!

You're probably going to have to sell it yourself and take a beating on the price. A name brand tractor has better resale value and their dealers are usually better capitalized. The dealers are also used to working with customers who trade in their equipment every couple of years so they usually know where to sell the stuff. When I was looking at replacing my baler, my JD dealer gave me the names of a couple of producers who had already ordered new balers. I could get a better deal buying the used (2 years) direct from the owner than waiting for it to be traded in and having to pay the dealer markup....good for the owner and less hassle for the dealer. I bought new because of the better tax advantage this year.

Sorry, but if you look in Fastline or any of the other used equipment publications you'll see very few no-name imports and little tractors. There isn't much of a market for them.

There is value there LB, it's almost a brand new machine. Just hasn't been to the right dealer. Don't wanna argue with you about it, it'll come to you some day.

No doubt there is value, but LB is right, there is no trade-in value.

This is something to consider when buying any lesser-known tractor. That low initial price is attractive, but if your strategy is anything other than to keep it forever, low price may not be the same as good value.

Also, circumstances change, and if a sudden sale is necessary getting money back out a tractor can be difficult.

There seems to be a "conventional wisdom" evolving here;
a) Overpay, like WAY overpay, for a "Brand name" that will supposedly "Hold it's value" for trade in.
b) Get a better deal, (invest less in a depreciating asset) and don't trade it in.

An implicit assumption of (a) is that your plan is to trade it in the short/medium term.
An implicit requirement of (b) is that you know what you want and know you will want to keep it.
Percentagewise you probably take a beating with (b) IF you decide to trade in the short/medium term.
Actual CA$H lost maybe same or less.
Exposure, capital at risk, opportunity cost is greater with (a), at least with conventional thinking.

If the orientation is towards lowest % financing and longest terms the picture (perspective) probably changes.
I don't buy what I can't pay for, so 0% for 72 months to me only means that the price has been inflated to take care of the loan - no deal here.

That's a nice clean rig. You should be able to sell that without a problem. My dealer would not take a trade-in either and I don't have a Montana. Perhaps they don't want to build up on used inventory.

What I found is that most dealers won't give a trade if it isn't their brand. They have to re-sell it and then live with it when it breaks and they don't want to work on anything but their own. I just went through it too. Sold my Kioti and ordered a Deere. They do sell. Put it on Craigslist.
