I absolutely love these foolish things! I snapped some photos of this one a few years back; they're so fun.

I worked on an old lady's house. She had a 1977 Chevy Luv 4x4 sitting in the driveway. Hadn't run in years.

My brothers FIL had two early 80's Ford Rangers, both were diesel. I would be surprised if they would pull the hat off your head. I rode in them.

My dad went out on got one of these after he got stuck on the mud one too many times in his F150. Was tired of 10mpg with the big V8 too. That little thing was unstoppable but turns out he didn't fit in it so well and it took a toll on his back. He passed it on to a smaller guy in the company, pretty comical to see that little thing coming in at break time with a dozen guys piled in the back !

These vehicles were generally a response by manufacturers and a want by consumers to the late 70’s very early 80’s gas crisis.
Now we are going through another type of gas crisis (otherwise known as expensive gas) and we are now seeing electric vehicles as an alternative.

They were a transitional design between the 1970s gas guzzlers and later more efficient vehicles. They hadn't quite figured out how to make them fuel efficient without making them smaller. However, VW had a diesel that would get 50 mpg back then.

I owned from new a 4wd Chevy love gas, made by Isuzu. It was low powered but not bad in general.
