I recently got a new JD2520 with R4 tires, and really haven't had a chance to use it with any reasonable amount of snow. From the post I've been reading hear, sounds like I should have ordered the turf tires.

I don't want to chain them unless absolutely necessary, so is there anyone out there using R4's for pushing snow that has anything good to say about them?

I have the JD front hitch and 54" blade, and a ballast box if necessary.

I have a 2320 w. R4s (not loaded) and have been blowing snow for 3 weeks now. No problems to report and I've been through 2 ft high drifts. I carry my landscape rake for rear traction and to push light snow falls. I would think if you encounter a heavy snowfall you would definitely need the ballast box to assist traction in pushing heavy snow.

Great question! My 3720 is coming with the large R4 tires as recommended by the dealer. He says no one in this section of the country uses R1's anymore and that R4's are superior to turfs in snow. The posts on TBN have me concerned however. I keep telling myself that I would still have a chain option if all else fails. So I am eager to see your responses to this question. I plan on loading mine with Rim Guard and normally have a 400 pound back blade on when either snowplowing with the front blade or blowing with the 59 inch front mount blower.

You'll be fine. No doubt chains are better, but you can move snow w/o chains all day long.

After one year using chains on a truck I won't use them on anything I'm gonna park inside anymore. If I was working on some steep slopes I'd probably reconsider.

I have a 2320 w/ loaded R4's - we had three separate 12" snows last year and the R-4's did just fine pushing 7 neighborhood driveways..

Joe, if you're talking of rust staining the concrete, I would park it on plywood.

I am running R4's (no chains) 7'+ plow,no problem even plowing up hill..but tires are loaded tho.

Last tractor I ran turf tires but needed rear tire chains to get extra traction.

On a hilly gravel driveway I had no trouble plowing with loaded R-4's in 6" or less snows. Now with last years 17" snow I had lots of trouble but was able to get the job done. If I had been able to plow that snow about 6" at a time it would have been no trouble.

With last winters second big snow, 22 inches, I had put on 4 link ladder chains and had no problems.
