Anybody familiar with owning/operating a bug farm?

Back in the late 60's my best friend's sister and her husband had a worm farm. They sold the worms as protein to some 3rd world country and sold the castings for fertilizer.

I suspicion that you eat a lot more insects/insect parts than you really want to know.

Locally, we had a worm farm ( I think waxys). The owner sold it on land contract, and was horrified when the buyer repaid the loan ($1M) in one year! All I know is that it was profitable and they were obsessed about a closed environment - no contamination of any sort.

Just curious how profitable this would be. The farm wouldn’t have to be specifiallly for human consumption, could be similar to a lady bug farm used to sell lady bugs to famers to kill avidly, or crickets sold for pets.

Seems like a load of money to invest in something like that cause bugs eat like crazy. Lady bug could be useful but I'd grow grasshoppers for food, I hear the chocolate coated ones are really good. 😝
