Back when I worked for a large company and transfered to a new city every 3+ years I used the large national moving vans. Granted the company paid for the moving but 4 long distance moves in 12 years I never had any major problems. Only had a few minor scratch issues. I even shipped cars. the last local move I did myself (with my sons help) but over a long time period which was a luxuary I had. Now I have to move sometime in the next six to nine months (developer has option on property). I plan on using the pods for my work shop and a few other areas, a piano mover, and a local mover for the household items. I will haul all my tractor and attachements myself. Again, short move less than 50 miles (I hope).
Anyway, the point I'm making is that there can be problems with any mover but in most cases they are fine. Buy extra insurance. Best thing you can do for long distance move is to simplify your possesions and sell or get rid of a lot of stuff. Only move what is necessary. When I moved a lot we didn't accumulate a lot of extras now I have a house and 2 barns worth. My moves will be started with renting a dumpster.

I have used abf u-pack. i moved from nc to pa. It was such a savings on what renting a u-haul would have been. make sure you request the ramps though. They dropped the tractor trailer off at our place, we loaded it up and put in a bulk head. you pay for the space you use. I would make sure everything is packed really good. Also things can get a bit dirty, so make sure things are plastic bagged. But it was a great company to use, i recommend them to everyone i know.

The easiest way to save money is to thin things out. Don't move anything that can be easily replaced or that has marginal value. Is the car restored? If it's a basket case, leave it behind. How much do you use the woodworking tools? This may be an opportunity for you to upgrade the shop.

Any Tips on Low Cost Moving?

Yeah -- WATCH OUT!

We moved from New York to Tucson, Arizona several years ago. I thought we had carefully checked out every twist and turn of using an independent mover. We expected to save about five thousand on what we were quoted as about $10,000 from the "regular" companies like United Van Lines.

Everything seemed to be going fine. The first bit of a glitch was that the company that we contracted with, was NOT the company that would actually do the move. Apparently they "sublet" the actual trucking to a "name brand" motor freight company. I had gone ahead to Tucson, and left my wife, two sons and several workers to do the actual move.

Moving day was "delayed" a couple of times. They gave us a "time frame" as opposed to a specific day. At any rate, the truck finally showed up, and all went well until the end, when we had just "a little extra" goods more than the specific "feet" we had contracted for.

So, the driver said he'd add it on (there was plenty of room in the trailer, around 15 more feet) so we said okay. The claim was that they would just bill us for the "extra feet." Based upon the calcs up to that point, it should have been just a few hundred dollars more.

On the drive out, as with pickup day, there was a "delivery gateway" and they went all the way to the end, around three weeks ("will arrive in 7 to 21 days").

Before the driver would unload, he presented us with a "final accounting", and the bill was double what we had agreed on, a balance due of nearly $5,000.

I read through the four or five sheets of the contract, and sure enough, there was a little "clause" in there, that if we changed the original quote terms, they had the right to "recalculate" the entire cost of the move. So they did just that; instead of billing us for just a few more feet, they wanted $5K more! Geez.

I knew from my research that the "independent moving industry" has more complaints than ANY other business in America. So, I had tried to be extraordinarily vigilant. But in the haste of a major move, sometimes people just go through the motions, are distracted by all the details, and maybe forget to read the "fine print". (Hint: Don't forget!).

The independent moving industry is not regulated by the Feds, nor state, and so they fall into a legal netherworld. It is legal for them to seize your property for "unpaid" invoices. They can they sell that off for whatever they want. If you take the time to research terms like "mover horror stories" you'll find many, many, many tales of woe --- of little old ladies who lost $40,000 of household goods, their cars and more, due to moving company scams. It is a grim scene, indeed.

We had an even more complicated mess, because the company that was doing the actual moving (not the company we had contracted with via the Internet) had, in the course of time that our goods were en route, entered into BANKRUPTCY. In fact, our shipment was one of the last and only in process jobs they had. No managers, no management, no process for complaints --- egads!

Finally, I got someone on the phone from the original company and they agreed to a settlement amount of "only" another $3,000.

So, it cost me. And of course, I thought I was getting off "dirt cheap"

Would I use an independent mover again. Well, I have done so -- to have a car transport bring a car from Ft. Lauderdale to Tucson, without any problem whatsoever.

If I was to use an independent mover for a household move again, I would probably not use a company that only exists on the Internet.

Even more importantly, look into the actual company you plan to use by checking with BBB, online forums, etc.

I would also look for a LOCAL company in the town I am leaving from. Find one that has been in business for at least 8-10 years. Call people they provide as references. Also, be very certain to determine your insurance situation. Get it in writing form your company agent, that the specific move will be covered.

But the most important point is : READ THE CONTRACT. If there is ANYTHING, even a comma, that doesn't look perfect to you, or that you cannot understand clearly, don't sign it.

It can work, I suppose. But man, it can really go south on you in a big hurry. I just felt danged "lucky" that we got out without "losing" everything. At least TBN was on our servers in Texas, and not on the truck!

Here is a site with advice on how to avoid a moving horror story, complete with horror stories!

Moving: How to avoid Moving Company Scams

Good luck.

P.S. When we moved from Tucson, to San Diego last year, we rented our own vans and did the move ourselves. It was very inexpensive, under $2,000, and we timed the move much better. Best of all we enjoyed PEACE OF MIND all the way, and that as they say, is priceless.

I agree with forgeblast on the ABF deal. When we moved from Niagara Falls to Tennessee last year, I had my 26' enclosed race car hauler that I moved my tractor in, along with my Harley and some fragile items. Due to work circumstances I had to made a couple of trips with the trailer. But I used ABF for all the really heavy stuff, and really packed it in tight.
You can price them online and if your schedule is flexible check various date combinations as the rates do vary. I had the trailer dropped off on a Friday with pick up on Monday so we had the whole weekend to load it.

Eight years ago we moved from Alberta to Nova Scotia. We did it ourselves in three trips.

Used a 96 dodge diesel pulling a bumper hitch 20 ft. trailer with a home built box on it. The box had two levels in it to make it easier to stack stuff in place.

Included a Kubota B7100 with tiller, mower, back blade and loader. Several canoes. a slide in truck camper and one trailered car. Others were driven.

No problems other than tired backs and gallons of sweat.

Total gross weight was up to 24,000 pounds. Averaged 14 MPG.

Still make good use of the truck and trailer.

This time last year my wife and I moved about 30 miles. It might as well have been 10,000,000. We lived in one spot for 32 years. (You accumulate a LOT of valuable junk over that period of time) We knew the move was coming, just not how sudden it happened. (long story, had a happy ending) We've got all sorts of trucks and trailers. No problem there. Not too much help. (read; none of the wrong help) Things got moved faster than we were really prepared for. Good so far.

Before you move, find a conveniently located chiropractor in the area where you're moving. IMHO, there is no cheap OR easy way to move. ;)

Good luck anyway.

the last time we moved we went about 20 yards from the house trailer to the house. but any other time i rented a truck and although it was hard work a good hand truck and a little money to a young strong helper makes it pretty smooth.
if i had to move a tractor and didnt have a trailer i would just rent one to hitch to the rented truck.

I just went though a very simliar move in Feb. VA > IN....
I priced everyone looked at Uhaul etc etc etc...
What did do was go with United... We had a 3 BR 2 bath place in VA and was moving to a similar in Rural southern IN....
We ended upgoing with United and doing all the packing ourself which is what really saved the $$$.
We got the boxes from the United warehouse, actually they just gave us used boxes which worked fine... wel packed it all up they did all the loading and unloading.
It really worked very very well and price wise it was not too bad as I recall around $6K. It was a very good overall experience. I remember the driver was very responsible as he told me he was responsible for everything in the truck until it was put in my house and we signed off.
Good luck where in IN are you moving to?
