We are finally getting the pipe fence in the front of our property put in. All of the 4" posts are in for the corners and entrances, now I have to weld out the two inch and build a couple of gates.

This is at the place where we are going to build our house, so my wife will be designing the driveway gate later. At the moment, I need to get my service entrance finished and the gate built.

I have looked quite a bit online, but haven't found any much information on building your own gate, so I'm making one up.

Anybody got any suggestions? I'm hoping the PDF upload worked, if not, there will be another post with the plans in a minute hopefully.

Thanks for the help. MRW

A few things to run by you here.

1. do the hinges "look" heavy enough. Are they designed for gates like this.
The reason for asking is a hinge rated for 800lbs on a 4' or so door wouldn't be anywherenear strong enough for a 15foot door/gate. Leverage comes into play big time and the 274lb gate can exert a lot of force on the hinges.

2. How far off the road is this gate going to be??

If it is too close to the road, you may not be able to pull all the way off the highway to open the gate. And if that is not an issue (back country road), 15' isnt very wide if you are pulling a sizeable trailer if the gare is close to the road and you don't have time to straighten out.

So if you want it close to the road and plan on using an automatic opener, or dont mind parking on the road, I'd go wider.

If you plan on setting it back, 15' is wide enough but measure you longest truck/trailer combo and go about 10' durther back.

Good luck with the build.

I build gates for a living. I also build lots of other things, but I really like building gates. You can search here on my name and see everything from a big cedar entryway with a pipe gate that looks like wood to a powered slide gate that has wagon wheels, a snake, squirrel, bird, and buckboard in it. There's also a gate with a five hundred pound of stone carved into the shape of the great state of Texas in the middle of it.

I've made a lot of pipe gates. I think a search of "fun with gates" that I put up here back in 2003 has some you might find interesting.

It used to be around here, north Texas, if you saw a pipe gate with staggered vertical supports I made it. Now most of them I see that are made and not bought have the staggered verticals so I guess the idea has caught on.

The first thing on the gate is you want the hinge upright to be the heaviest gauge pipe you have on hand. I recommend schedule forty. The latch upright can be the lightest one you have on hand, I usually use sixteen gauge. The reason for the lightest on the end is you're putting less stress on the hinge post and hinge side of the gate.

I stagger the vertical supports because I've found it creates a truss affect and eliminates sag over time. I've got one tubing gate made this way that's over twenty feet long that's been up since 1992 and still swings straight and true.

Have your wife look at my stuff for ideas. I also recommend a search of the Miller projects forum for a look at a gate some weldor made in California I believe. The gate posts are made to look like palm trees and the gate itself has sea gulls, and waves in it, spectacular.

Awhile back a client wanted something spectacular. I suggested and talked to Ms Benedict about building a gate for them using both of our talents. It was too expensive but man, it would have been a gate.

Check her out. Rearing Horse

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/projects/111160-other.html It's a long thread but has some gates that you might find interesting.

Good luck and be sure and post pictures. We here on TBN love pictures.

I have two properties with chainlink fence and a total of eight gates. Looking at the width you are going for I would suggest you consider a two piece gate to minimize the weight on the posts. And if you make them wide enough you only have to open one side to gain entry with a standard vehicle but can open both for trucks etc.

I have one set of gates that is probably 24 foot wide and I put a trailer jack with a wheel on what I use as the stationary side that isn't opened very often.

And the suggestion about setting them back from the highway is an excellent one. Both my driveway gates are set back and it makes it much safer.

The next gates I will put in ... when I install the fence on my upper fields .... will be the aluminum "animal" gates .... very similar to your drawing ... available at TSC or Agway. Lighter and easy to install.

The gate is 48 feet from the edge of the road and the fence leading into the gate is opened 26.5 feet, just in from a 24 foot culvert.

After installing the posts, i kind of wished i had made the opening 20 feet with two 10 foot gates, but little late for that now. I think I have enough room to work, if not i'll tear it up later and redo it.

Still a work in progress. More as I figure things out.

and on the hinges, they don't look big enough. Thanks for that suggestion, i'm going to find bigger ones and keep these in stock for some smaller project. Maybe the walk gate on the side.

I settled on 2 8' gates for my private entrance. One open gate will allow a careful entry by any truck even with mirrors extended. This keeps the entrance speed down because just about all drivers arent skilled enough to sail right thru at warp speed. To get a wide mower or trailer thru, you open both gates. The double gates also make for an easier auto gate opener installation as well as replacement when someone wacks the gate because THEY DIDN'T SEE IT ????

I have a motion sensor light and Miltronics thermal sensors on the light pole and the normally closed gate. It will ring annunciators in the house, at the shed and even on my golf cart, no matter where its parked (1000+' range).

It really depends on whether you want people to be curious and explore your place or do you want them to politely think carefully about coming in?

On building a heavy duty gate hinge you might think about making the gate Post part of the hinge, if you have a welding rig to bring on site, you fine a size of pipe that slips over the gate post with out to much slack, cut these 6 to 8 in. long if you want you can drill each of these for a grease fitting, then to instal your first have to make 2 base plates like 2 large washers out of 3/8 plate for each pipe to bare on, a base plate has to go at the bottom of each of your each hinges, DO YOUR WELDIND on the BOTTON SIDE, once you have located where you want the Bottm hinge, instal the bottom Base Plate then your bottom pipe hinge then locate where you want your top Hinge and place your base plate then your top pipe hinge, depending on what type gate i am going to hang, I either weld a piece for 1/4 x 4 flat bar on edge to each of the collars or some time i weld a piece of Pipe at a right angle to the Collar, most of the time i do this before putting them on the gate post, once you have your gate hung if you want you can well a stop above the top hinge so nothing can lift the Gate, you do a gate like this with Heavy enough Pipe set deep and braced right it will out last most of US
