Tractor
John Deere 5045D, Grasshopper 61" with PowerVac,Gator 825i, Cub Cadet 2145
I am in the market for a 40 or so HP tractor with front end loader. The strong dealers in my area sell Kubota and John Deere.

I got list prices off the manufacturer websites and the dealers don't seem to want to come more than about 8 or 9 % off list. Is this typical? It seems like I've seen sales in the past that indicate much deeper cuts than this.

While I'm at it, my family goes back a LONG ways with John Deere equipment. It's kind of hard for me to think about buying a tractor that isn't green and yellow. Anyone have long term experience with this size Orange Japanese tractor?

Thanks for your help,
Doc

Doc, First, realize that no small tractors are made in the US anymore. They are made over seas. The best are made in Japan. The small Deere's are Yanmar tractors from Japan. Korea is a major player as well. This has been true for quite some time.

Just because the Deere has those familiar colors doesn't mean it isn't also Japanese, 'cause it is. At best, they receive "final assembly" here in the US, but the major components and engines, are from overseas. Sorry, if you didn't know. Most come over in a crate and wheels are put on, but that's about it. Kubota does final assembly here in the US as well. Kubota has earned a reputation as being an outstanding machine for over 30 years.

Deere or Kubota. Widely ecognized as the best of the best. You couldn't go wrong with either one.

9% of website "sticker" is about right. You'll have to push harder to get a bit more.

Thats sad but TRUE. Not a single tractor is made in the USA any more. Both of those brands are good and you would be fine with either one. You might want to give MF a look into also, another well built machine.

Great and helpful responses and I thank you.

I didn't know that the small green & yaller ones are now made in Japan. For all I knew they were still made in Germany.

The MF and New Holland dealers in the area have very little inventory. My impression of the Kubota dealer is best. Now I have to decide if I want to try using a Front end loader on a 2WD tractor. I will be using the front end loader mostly for moving gravel and moving around brush and timber.

Hey Doc, get the 4x4 and never look back. It is as common today on small tractors as the steering wheel. Why?

Because these tractors are not nearly as heavy, especially in relation to the awesome horsepower they how have, as the tractors of yore.

You need, you want 4 wheel. You run out of traction way faster than run out of horsepower on these modern tractors. You don't have the weight to get it, it's got to come from 4 wheel drive.

Some of you are jumping the boat...the Deere 4X20 series are indeed American built tractors. No they are not 100% American components but they are 100% NOT made in Japan. The yare bulit in GA, they have Deere buit diesel motors.

I agree.

I played around in 2wd and was severely limited on dry dirt moving small loads around and even maneuvering was hard.

As are a whole bunch of other tractors made in Georgia, including the Orange ones.

Well, as someone will be quick to point out, I am sure, the under 43 hp, 4000 series are Yanmars. 43 hp and above, Deere. But as yet another might point out, where was that Deere engine made? Does it even matter anymore?

The entire issue is beside the point for me, anyhow. These are international companies with stock holders everywhere. Even if final assembly is done here, the content is world wide in "origin". Just didn't want anyone to still think these are the old days, 'cause they aren't. World wide economy. It is what it is. Still, I grieve the loss of all most of our manufacturing base in this nation.

Doc

I got 15% off the list of my JD3720 with 300cx FEL, Frontier RC2060 cutter and Imatch hitch. You can do a lot better than 8-9%, especially in this economy.

17.8% off on a Deere 4520 cab tractor I wouldn't buy at less than 15% discount. No one can buy a truck, auto or tractor for close to msrp, these prices are over inflated to start with. There are at least two companies in Texas that are selling discount Deere packages, hopefully someone who knows the name of the dealers will chime in.
