Box Scraper Any reason I shouldn't just scrap it?

Purchased some property a few years ago and was left this disc harrow. I believe it is a 9' proprietary disc for a Farmall Cub. It seems to be in pretty bad shape and it is just taking up space in my barn and was wondering if it's good for anything or should I just scrap it? Anybody with any thoughts?

That hitch setup is for the IH "Fast Hitch" two-point system. We had a Farmall 450 on our farm that had that same hitch setup, which actually worked quite well.

That 9' disc would not have been for a Cub. The Cub only had about 10hp +/-, and could not have lifted or pulled that disc. Something like our 450 would have pulled it quite well.

To answer your question, I wouldn't scrap it. There are Farmall collectors out there looking for implements with the Fast Hitch setup. They are not going to pay you a million dollars for it, but you can probably get more than scrap prices if you find the right guy. Plus, it would be a shame to scrap a piece of history like that, IMHO.

You would do better selling the disk rather than scrapping it. Around here scrap steel sells for $0.07-09 a pound currently. If it is 9', I doubt that a Farmall Cub pulled it.

Thanks for the info Pappy and Wolftree. I feel the same way about not scrapping a piece of history, but I wasn't really sure if it would be worth anything to anyone. I will try listing it in a couple places and see if I can find it a new home.

With that 2 PT hitch and 9' (may actually be 8') some body that has old tractors would want it. Run on CL and some of the Old International sites and let it live on. Scrap is a horrible way for old iron to die. Too much has been hauled off.

In the 1950s, each tractor/ag equipment manufacturer developed their own version of "Quick Hitch". Fast Hitch was International Harvesters version. The Ford/Ferguson 3 Point Hitch won out of course.

I've paid more than scrap prices for rusty yard art & been blown out of the water by others much more motivated. The nice thing about rusty yard art is nobody expects it to work or be in great shape. Specific models aren't terribly relevant either.

Post it on Craigslist & see what you can get. Better chances if you note you can load it. Better market & prices if you can deliver it as lots who think its cool don't have the gear to do it themselves.

Thanks for pointing that out. After you mentioned it, I remember seeing somewhere on the Internet a few months ago that it was an IH Fast Hitch but I didn't do anything about it then. When I finally got around to posting the pictures last night somewhere I had Farmall Cub stuck in my head.

Great information from everyone, thanks. I will list it and see what happens. I'm really not looking to get anything for it, I just want to free up the space and I wasn't sure if there would be anyone out there who would want it. Like everyone pointed out, it would be a shame to scrap a piece of history that someone else might appreciate having.

I've never welded before plus it would be a much bigger project than I have time for. Thanks for the suggestion though. I admire guys that can do that sort of thing, I'm just not one of them. It would start out looking like a disc harrow and end up looking like a wrecked Yugo.
