any Mac repair gurus here??

Not sure if your G4 is a aluminum or titanium they are a little more difficult to work on. Just trying to get the case off without damading it is an art. Did you try a Mac store? They probably would have the best qualified personell to repair a Mac.

Typically, the Apple Store stops assistance on machines older than X years. The G4 fits the "ceased support" age group. Simple enough to understand, as they cannot keep their techs up to snuff on all these older models.

An independent is actually a better solution on older hardware.

it is an aluminum one.. AND based on ifixit quite a lot of parts to remove to get to the HD.. I think I could follow the ifixit (has pic and detailed instructions) tutorial, but would rather farm it out..

UPDATE - erased the HD using Disk Utility and ran the scan and it came back as no problems.. Reinstalled the OS and it ran for a few hours..

BUT now it has crashed again.. I ordered a new Western Digital hd from Amazon it should be here next week..

The mac o/s is $29 dollars.

There are a few things you can do.

If you have a bad drive or failing drive.. try this.
Use the disk utility to create two partitions, lets say your drive is
80 gig. Make the first partition 40 and the second 40. format the second as guid.

goto apple.com and buy the o/s on a dvd, if you dont have it already.
when you install it, put it on the second partition.

I have successfully installed it this way and saved buying a new drive.

You can also try diskwarrior to repair the drive, most times that useful for just getting your data off, but since you used firewire, maybe dont need it.
