I am building an indoor riding arena. I purchased 400watt lithonia sodium vapor indoor lights at an auction last year. Can anyone tell me how many lights I would need for the following: Arena is 65 x96, 14 foot high. The lights have a shade to reflect the light down and use a S-51 bulb. Or maybe someone could answer how many square feet 1 light will need. I plan to wire them 220 so they would only draw 2.8 amps each. Thanks for the info. Glenn

Nice.. an indoor areena.

I have the usual outside areena/corral.

I put up 6 500w trapezoidal floods.. works decent. Lights are either 16 or 20' up.. areena is eliptical.. say 50x100 or so.

Lets see pics of it when you are done!

You say they are Sodium lights. As in High Pressure Sodiunm. Are you sure you will like this type of light? This is the orang, amber light that you see from many street lights. The color rendition is terrible. A nice Metal Halide or Fluorescent fixtures will lok much better. If you do decide to hang them for now. Mount receptical so you can easily change the fixture later.

Yes they are sodium and do have a yelowish tint to the light. I agree that there is better choices but I bought 16 of them at an auction for 15 bucks each. I think its worth a try and like you said I f I dont like them change them out with halide. Thanks Glenn

Different reflectors have different profiles. I may be able you to give you more info if you can supply the model of the lights.

From your situation I'm going to guess that you'll need all 16 of them to evenly light the entire area because of your ceiling height. You won't want to aim them too high to prevent blinding the horses and riders so the coverage area will be reduced.
