So, I'm sitting out back enjoying that 1st cup o' joe this morning and I hear some rustling from the roof area. Hmmm? Get the ladder out and upon inspecting the rain gutter I find this jurassic looking creature flipped over on his back struggling to right himself. Can anyone identify it and tell me...should i be afraid, very afraid?

I agree with LMTC. The males are even uglier , but fun to watch as the males "compete" for the "sweet attensions" of females. Homosapiens are not that much different ;). Jay

OH, I share your fear. I've killed at least 50 of those this spring. I'm building a deck and they seem to love the sandy soil next to the house. Nothing like kneeling down to nail a board and comming up with one of those suck to your pants! I've found the best method of dispatch to be decapitation. A piece a deck flashing is my guillotine of choice. I call them scarab beetles and I see their larva when cutting firewood. Another note: in soft sand they leave tracks that look like kids bike tires!

saw it only in a book, but in my language we call them Nosorozik- means little Rhino.

Hey bubba: Do NOT kill those bugs. They have quarters!!! Merely take their money and let them live. You can take their lunch money again the next day.

Tie a fishing line to their leg and tie the other end to a miniature dog house. Then put that next to your welcome mat. See what people think.

I found this Sphinx Moth Pupa in the ground when I was digging new potatoes. Normally I only find earthworms and grubs. This one surprised me just because of its size.

You guys have some upper class bugs. They all have quarters. My bugs have only dirt and an attitude.

I found a male rhino beetle the other day. I was amazed at how strong they are. They almost defy the law of physics with their strength. It certainly would freak you out if you grabbed a hold of him unwittingly.

I think I read that the Rhino beetle can lift/move 600 times it's own weight....akin to a 200# man moving or lifting 120,000 pounds.

OK, found it in Wikipedia....criminy, it's even more! 850 times.

If he had asked for 50 cents, I'd have given him that too.;)
