Any coyote hunters

I have hunted and shot coyotes on my property. However, its kind of like standing at the edge of the ocean and bucketing water. There is a never-ending supply. I used a 22-250 custom made rifle with 6 by 12 Redfield scope. I have a continuous loop tape of a rabbit screaming which goes in a "boom box" and all this inside a large cardboard box. I hunted my large(120 acre) lake - sit in the reeds, aim the cardboard box/boom box out across the lake and let her rip. This was winter hunting and the coyotes would come in from across the frozen lake. I've made shots over 450 yards but I think those shot involved a lot of luck.

Seemed the more coyotes I shot, the more were around. I gave up long ago and now I just watch them out the kitchen windows.

Another good way to attract them is with bait, such a a deer carcass or other dead animal.

I ran sheep in Western Colorado, near little town of Crawford. 1200hd. I could lose 10 a night, one very bad night 40 hd of prime replacement ewes were killed. Throats and butts chewed out. I tried shooting as many of the SOB's that I could. I was and still am shooting a Ruger 77 in 220 Swift, with an 18X Burris. A very deadly combo. Losing that 40 hd, broke my spirit, I couldn't even help the rendering truck load them. I Hate Coyotes!!!!

I've hunted them off and on over the year. My favorite current, most effective tactic is to drag the hogs I kill to the field behind my house and gut it out there. Then I leave the guts, carcass, head and hide there to rot. It takes about two days, maybe three if it's cool out to bring them in. I never see them at first light, but for some reason, 8 to 9am is when I've had the most success. I usually spot them sitting at the edge of the trees watching the vultures. Last year while deer hunting, I spotted two coming out at about noon to eat off a hog that was just about cleaned up. It was a long stalk to where they where, but that was my first and only double. I got the first one eating, and the second one on the run with my 30-06 deer rifle.

I've shot them with .22LR fairly close, but usually use a 22-250 with a bipod on it. Ive had spotty results calling them, but for awhile I had a cassette that I played in a boom box that was great. Just set it out in a field next to a bush, or put a branch with leaves over it and let it play for 15 minutes. If nothing came, move to another location. Sometimes as many as three came in to the call. A few times a bobcat showed up.

That cassette finally died and they don't make them anymore. I bought it from Cabelas, but I don't remember who made it.

My neighbor has one of the new digital calls, but he hasn't had any success with it. I don't know what all he is doing, so it might be him. I've thought about buying something new, but there seems to always be something more important to spend money on and I have so many projects going on all the time that I hate spending the time to go out and call them in. The hog guts work great and I only have to scan the tree line every now and then to get one.

Thanks, lots of great info so far. I need to check again but I didn't think I was allowed to hunt anything with an AR in PA, but it's been 5-6 years since I've looked into it so that might have changed. I didn't realize the price for the hides was so low, I wasn't planning on selling them but that's not enough to make your time worth skinning them. Mainly it is something I want to do when I have a little free time and try to thin the population (probably not possible) as they have bothered my neighbors dogs and local farmers animals. I might have to get a mouth call and try it, i never had any success calling turkeys with a mouth call but maybe I'll do better with yotes.
Keep the info and experiences coming.

Eddie - hog carcasses would be perfect to draw them in, luckily though that is one nuisance animal we don't have to worry about here. It would be fun though, shoot some pigs, move the carcasses and then shoot a coyote. 👍

that is a good size one Eddie.

I agree with Eddie, Dead hogs will bring em in. I usually find them stripped clean and nothing but bones in 3-4 days. Set up a game cam last time and saw coyotes, hawks, vultures, neighbors dog from 1/4 mike away and after the hog was dragged off more hogs sniffing around...

Shot these 2 new years morn. 1st one showed up and popped her around 9am the kept still (was deer/hog hunting) and at 9:30 another female showed. You gotta be quick and not think twice as they will not hang around long.

My wife got me a foxpro call for Christmas and just ordered the decoy for it so looking forward to trying it.

AR is great rifle for this and the 223 works at any reasonable range.

And for me, in order to maintain my Ag exemption, I've classified my property under wildlife management and preditor control is one of my required activities..... So I'm required to hunt em :)

I haven't done much calling in the last several years but about 55 years ago I guess it was, my hunting buddy and I started with the original Burnham Brother's ( of Texas ) C-3 and S-2. Used mostly the C-3 long range. I used a .243 75 gr hollow and some situations called for the 12 ga with #4 buck. My buddy had only one rifle as I did and his was a Mannlicher-Schoenauer 30-06 with 110 gr.

Possibly the biggest mistake of a beginner is calling too much (often) at a setting. Allow for wind and possibly just as important is sun / light direction. He'll take advantage of you if you screw that up.

In general, be patient with cats. Cats take longer than coyotes but just as coyotes cats can also be un-predictable. That's what makes it so much fun. Of all the coyotes and cats we had come in the situation was never duplicated, not even in the same location.

Never camouflaged and If I recall this was the original ad we saw in the magazines.
