I'm in the market for a compact tractor and after looking at several makes and models I think that I'm going to go with a Deere 2720. Any feedback on the following questions is greatly appreciated.

1. I'm considering new as well as used. What year did the 2720 come out? The oldest used models that I've found are 2008. Has this model received any updates/improvements/recalls since its introduction?

2. What is a good price for a new base 2720? My local dealer quoted me $16,000. That sounded quite high to me.

3. What is a reasonable discount off of retail for 2720 implements?

The quote I got a month ago was $15,900 for a 2720 (tractor only), $2500 more than the 2520 that I ended up ordering. They also told me the soonest they could get one would be the end of november.

I don't know when the 2720 production began, however I purchased mine in March of 2009.

I havent heard of any recalls. I've had zero problems with my tractor. The only challenge I have is the pallet fork lifting capacity. I've found I use the forks a lot and there are some heavy things I can't lift, and if I can, only a few inches off the ground. My plan is to go to a 3320 this fall or next spring. The lifting capcity is the only reason I'll move up. All the ground work, back hoe work etc. has been done easily and quickly.

My all in price was $27000 CDN if memory serves me right. That included the tractor, 200CX, backhoe and ballast box. I'm not sure if prices have risen of not in the past 18 months. I believe the discount off the CDN pricing on Deere was about 15%. When I figure all that in, your quoted price doesn't seem too bad.

Hope this helps.

I did go to the 3320 for lifting, front bucket size (73"HD) and a more powerful BH. All else aside the 2720 is a great little tractor and I had no problems with mine.

I just checked one of the sites that advertises and found $100 difference between 2720 / 3320 with FEL. Add approx $1,000 so both have the HST and maybe a couple of other options. Anyway - say $2,000 difference to move to 3320 might be money well spent if FEL lift capacity is important. Added bonus is 3 spd trans.

It's a lot less expensive to go straight to 3x20 than to trade up in a year or two.

The only thing that might hold someone back is that implements cost a lot more for the 3x20 series. The 300cx with 73" HD runs over 4 grand. Ouch!!
Don't get me wrong I love it but that's a lot of money, now add the price of the tractor, maybe a deck and your several grand over a 2x20 series. I thinik the 200cx loader runs about $2,500.

The MSRP for the loaders, first line on the chart without accessories is as follows:
200X $2545
200CX $3209
300 $3420
300CX $4610

Agreed there can be price differences for implements, however, the OP didn't really give any indication of what he wants to do and also didn't seem to indicate any preference between HST vs. PR. If he has one or two mission critical tasks that might help to steer him in the right direction. Without looking up the actual specs I suspect a 300 FEL will lift more than a 200CX - probably higher as well and longer reach.

A 2720 may be perfect for the OP, but by the time he has one optioned as needed, I'm just saying it's worth a look at the 3x20 series before signing on the dotted line.

I don't disagree Cinder, only pointing out the implement price.
The 300Cx will lift about twice the 200Cx loader.

Boy if I could get a 3320 with PR for only $1500 more than a 2720, I'd do so in a heartbeat.
