Another slight variation of a sub soiler. Heres my attempt.....

Finally got a coat of paint on it and gave it a test run this morning.

I got the angle right, it digs in nicely and rips down to about 10-12 inches.

Shank is made from 5/8" X 2.5" flat stock. (16mm X 60mm). Draw bar is 4" X 2" heavy gauge channel iron. Mostly built from scrap bits I had in my pile. Only expense was in buying a new pair of lower pins...

I put a "dog leg" in the top link position to keep the pin geometry even... I also made the top link post slightly higher than regular units to keep the top link horizontal when the sub soiler is fully engaged in the ground.
I didnt realise I had so many big rocks in my yard! This puppy pulled up some monsters!!!
Now I realise I need to change my turf tyres for AG tyres!! Even in 4wd, I got anchored up a couple of times.... Saying that though, even with turfs fitted, it worked very well....

Very nice!

Must add that to my priority list.

Thanks for the good description.

you can also use a cultivator shank of a heavy type of cultivator. I cultivate with 9 of these at 10 to 15" spaced 10" apart. It would give you the right angles, plus easy to replace wear parts ;)

You did a really good job on that one. It's better than most you would pay money for. What does it weigh?

Also, on my store bought one...the soil penetrating part of the bar is beveled in the front to help it cut through roots and soil, etc. Did you bevel yours?

It weighs around 50lbs.

Did you bevel yours?

No I didnt bevel the front edge but that sounds like a good idea. I'll do that before I use it again. Thanks!

It does look good. You can also attach a tube set up to use it to lay water line or electic.

Without a shear pin low speed is important. Would still suggest seat belt when running it. kt

I have turf tires and run rear chains year 'round. They make a huge difference.
