DK40SE: for the past 6 months I have been starting it by bypassing at the starter with a screwdriver. When you try the key it just makes a “click” sound. I have been too cheap to buy a new key switch until today but to my surprise it made no difference with the new switch. Fires right up with the screwdriver at the starter. What should I check or replace next?

Jumping with screwdriver would take ground out of the equation right?

Jumping with a screwdriver would indicate he has a good ground and a good power connection to the starter.

Not knowing what posts on the starter he is shorting across, I can only assume he is taking power to the solenoid indicating it is working. That is why I suggested the relay as a possible issue.

I’m guessing the low amperage wire going to the solenoid is the problem.

Check for fusible links.

I don't know about Kioti in particular, but Branson uses some fusible links for the starter and some other applications.

Here is an example:

A bad start relay is a common cause of these symptoms. This is a common automotive relay; special Kioti part not needed. There are three relays on the "firewall". Two of these relays are the same (start relay and stop relay). The third relay (glow plugs) has a higher current rating.

I would assume the "click" you are hearing is the starter solenoid cycling but not making the connection between the positive battery cable and the starter motor. Sounds like you need a solenoid. If it is a light click from where the relays are...then a relay may be the culprit. Is the small wire on the solenoid getting power?

The distinct clack (when turning the key to ON) is the stop solenoid retracting. The start solenoid is energized then the key is turned to start; it's not very loud.

As a test, you can swap connectors between the two similar relays. If the engine cranks with the relays swapped (but won't start) That's good evidence of a bad start relay.
