15hp per bottom is the rule of thumb

obviously a single 10" and a single 18" dont pull the same but for normal 14-16" plows....15hp per bottom.

my 33hp hydrostat can BARELY squeak out my 2bottom 14.

87hp.... 4-5 bottom plow...

It's not why I think Deeres pull hard. My own experience has been they seem around my area to pull very hard. Most people in this area seem to be of the same opinion. I have used IH, Deere, and Ford (Oliver/White) on the same tractors over the years and the Deere just pulls harder. Most of the farmers I know that still use this type of plow have switched away from the Deere. A friend of mine that I do plowing for with his tractor and plow, when he switched from a 4 btm deere to a 4 btm Ford of the same width. I can now pull 1 and sometimes 2 gears higher. I tried all kind of adjustments, but could never get the Deeres to pull as nice.

One thing I found out not that long ago is that Deere on some models was/is making an option of kneverland bottoms on there plows. I would love to try a set with those just to see how they pull.

Very hard pulling is how I would describe a JD plow. I owned a JD 3020 tractor back in the seventies and pulled a 3-14 mounted 145 JD plow. I did this for 10 years thinking I was doing real good. Then my business took in on trade a 4-14 Ford trip plow with 3 point hitch. I decided to just see if I could budge it on one sunny spring day, and to my surprise, I could run with it and it did not edge up the ground being turned like the JD did. We keep JD plows on our retail lot because some customers will have nothing else. You know the old saying the "customer is always right". Ken Sweet

I did some looking at parts numbers for the moldboards, shares, shins, etc for our 1600 JD plow vs the older 145 etc plows and I believe the bottoms are considerably different. I don't know for a fact but my guess is they redesigned their plow bottoms sometime in the 80's. This might explain our different experience with JD plows. Does anyone have a 'newer' JD plow that they can comment on, at least as new as our 1600 (1985), or newer?
