In commemeration of the Marine Corps 230th Anniversary the U.S. Mint is going to make a Silver Dollar with the flag raising at Iwo Jima on one side and the Marine Corps Emblem on the other.
This is the first time the Government has struck a coin for any military branch. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
The coin will not be for general circulation but will be legal tender. The coins will be in a display case and will sell for $39.00. A $10.00 surcharge is included to support the Marine Corps Museum.
The coins will go on sale in July.
I thought this was really cool and thought you fellow Marines and coin collectors should know. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Where would a person buy a coin that is not going into circulation?

A few years ago, maybe 5 or 6, a neighbor of my parents came by and asked my Dad if he'd been in the Marine Corps. He said no, but his son, Me, was back in the eighties. The neighbor said he saw my picture up on the wall with a caption about my spit shining my boots. Don't know if I'm still in the museum or not, but I was for awhile anyway.

Hey Eddie,

I served from '82-'86. I was a 2145. What did you do for Uncle Sam's Marine Corps?

I was an 0411, or MIMS clerk. I went open contract and ended up pushing paper. It wasn't what I'd hoped for, but I really didn't care when I joined. I was at Camp Pendleton assigned to Comm with the wing for awhile, then with NBC. That was a blast. If I was to do it again, I'd have gone NBC. I loved holdng gas chambers and torturing everyone. Especially the WM's and brass. LOL

We got a new Top in around early 85 who had just finished a tour with MSG battalion. He talked about serving at the embassies and how cool it was, which sounded like something I wanted to do, so I applied.

I went to MSG school in Quantico that summer and was statione at the embassy in Yaounde Cameroon for 14 months, then Jakarta Indonesia for 16 months. THAT was awesome duty!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did the embassy thing for a couple of years. Someone had to repair the gear you guys broke.

That really was one of the best tours I did despite being posted in Cairo. Got along quite well with the Marines, in fact, my address was used many times for an over-nighter. Gunny used to say he was annex my spare bedroom into the list of berthing spaces. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif They were some of the best Marines.

That's pretty cool. I might try to get one.

Cityboy,

I was in at the same time. Just went brain dead and can't recall the # for my MOS but I was in avionics (mainly UH-1 and AH-1 but worked on EA6-B's for a year or so as well).

Eddie,

That's a hoot! I was on the team of programmers/analysts that maintained the MIMMS AIS during that time frame. I was a federal employee at the time. I serve active duty in the Green Machine '65-'69.

bczoom,
I thought you might be interested in this coin. I too would like to get one. I couldn't get the release date but it is sometime in July. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Cityboy,
I too was in from 82-86. What a small world! I was a 0844. That would be a Fire Direction Controlman for Artillery
155MM Howitzers towed.
Basically I was a human computer. I was at Camp LeJeune the whole time. No Fuji stick for me. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Eddie,
That is pretty cool being in the museum. I had an interview back in 84 or 85 to be a poster child on a bill board for the Corps. I didn't get the job, but I came very close. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I wonder if it's in the works to make those coins for the USN too? USN, 1970-1978. I worked with the Marines off and on from 70 -74.

Served as corpsman 2/12 3rd Mar Div Vietnam 67-68. Got a chance to have my picture taken with Gen Tommy Franks last week. I had a very tiny USMC pin on my jacket. Tommy Franks looked down and saw my pin and said Semper Fi. I said "Vietnam 67-68".
HE said "Welcome home" to me. That's the first time that had been said to me. Not bad coming from a 4 star!

Semper Fi to all of you jar heads!

Marine1,

I was at Camp Fuji '85/86' winter. Too darn cold to get a Fuji Stick! Snow up to your waist and drifts 10' high some of the time. I heard a story that a guy tried to climb the mountain on his birthday in March, by himself. They found him in June when the snow thawed.

It's good to hear from all you old Jar Heads! It is a small world. Where did you fellas get to go? Me: 29 Palms for 29 months, Pohang Korea-Freedom Banner '84, Okinawa, Phillipines (twice /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif), mainland Japan. Spent new-years '86 in Tokyo, man it gets cold there! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Rough on a Southern boy!

Dolphin, please accept a second "welcome home" from me. Those of us familiar with Marine Corps history appreciate what you went through.

cityboyfarmer,
I went to all the major Marine Corps bases. I went to MCRD for Boot Camp, and let us not dispense with the who's better MCRD or PI, /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif then I went to Ft. Sill OK. for Survey and FDC school. Went to Camp LeJeune and stayed there for the rest of my time.
Did some major shoots, exercises, and gun testing at 29 Palms, Pendelton, Ft.Bragg, Ft.Hood, and Ft.Pickett Va.
For one Exercise I went to Vieques P.R. for 18 days. That sucked but liberty in Nassau Bahamas was awsome. Best 3 days of my Marine Corps career. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I found out later when I checked out that the reason I never went to Japan was because someone in admin. did not complete my check in and they didn't know I was there. I actually had to check in to check out. All this after three and a half years. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I didn't see any action and I thank the lord for it. The weird thing about my family is that when there was a war, every member of my family either wasn't able to go, didn't see action, or was in between conflicts. I almost qualify as a military family too. I hope our luck never changes.
