I just came in from plowing snow with my four week old 2210 (13.7 hours), worked great. Afterward, while cleaning off the tractor, I noticed a small amount of red fluid on the garage floor, under the transmission. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif It looked like it was running down the right side of the trans case.

To see better, I jacked up the rear end and removed the tires. It looks like the leak is coming from up top, where the rockshaft control valve bolts to the transmission. I can see there is a gasket between the valve body and the trans case.

Bigpete recently posted that his new 2210 had a leak somewhere near the rockshaft area:

I wonder if I have the same kind of leak?

I know I should just call the dealer and have them come get it, but it kind of makes me cringe at the thought of someone I don't know taking apart my new hydrostatic transmission! Especially a model they've never worked on before.

I'm tempted to take off the ROPS, seat and rear fender cover, then try tightening the valve body mounting bolts. Problem is, I don't have a service manual with the torque values. Since the 2210 model is so new, I'm guessing no one else has this information. The JD website parts list says the mounting bolts are M12. Any thoughts?

Forgot to mention, although the valve body is cast iron, the mounting bolts thread into the aluminum trans case.

cbh30,

I would take my chances letting the dealer make the repair. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Other then oil changes, grease, and filters I would not touch a tractor that is under warrantee...

I would not even mention you took off the tire, the leak is their problem an they should fix it...

Just as the others have mentioned, my advice is to resist the temptation of taking things apart. I topped mine off with the exact spec of JD fluid, called the dealer, and he said to finish my work checking the sight glass every half hour, or so.

No matter how I feel about having somebody wrench into my tractor (with only 7 hours), it's not going to be anybody BUT the dealer. If there is a common problem on the 2210, you and I would never have any support if we ventured in ourselves.

It appears that my leak may originate from two places: the bottom two bolts (of four) on the toplink plate on the back of the transaxle. I also spotted a drip that could have originated from anywhere on the top right-hand side that had formed on casting on the right of the trans oil filter.

With 12 hours, your dealer shouldn't bat an eyelash about coming to pick it up. My dealer is on the way this morning. I am guessing (hoping) these may be gasket and torque issues. They are very common on such complex machinery and I have heard about leaks from new tractors on virtually all brands. It doesn't make me feel much better, but I'm going to make sure I don't screw anything up. Pushing, plowing, and scooping snow in 4WD puts more stress/pressure on the hydraulics than most of the leak tests performed during setup, especially dealer prep. If the pressure relief system is set higher than the gaskets and bolt torque can handle, the fluid will find a way out.

I'll keep the thread posted when I hear back on the problem. Don't do anything rash or spend any energy worrying. Neither of those things have ever fixed a piece of machinery for me.

A snapshot of the PTO and toplink plate. The two bottom bolts for the toplink plate are at the top of the picture above the "Tuff Torq" name in the casing. The fluid appears to be coming from around those two bolts and perhaps from the toplink plate gasket area.

The other area that may be a leak sorce is harder to photograph, but I will give it a shot.

The tractor just left my property on a rollback, and I expect a call from the dealer before day's end.

Okay, I resisted temptation and called the dealer, they said they would pick it up early next week.

There was one other thing I noticed. After raising the loaded ballast box on the three point hitch I typically lock it in place by closing the rockshaft drop rate control valve. After using the tractor, it is sometimes very difficult to open the control valve. Anyone else notice this?

Finally, though not a big deal, I noticed that the plastic cover for the mid (not rear) PTO shaft was missing upon delivery. I didn't even know there was supposed to be a cover, except that I saw it on the drivetrain parts list (M139089). Did anyone else get a cover?

Thanks all for the good advice.

Mine came with a PTO cover as you can see in the pics above. Yours should have shipped with it on from the factory.

I noticed the drop rate knob was very hard to turn as well. Interesting. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif After I noticed my leak, I shut everything down and tried to drop the lift arms to check the fluid level, according to the manual. The lift arms stayed locked in place even though I opened the drop-rate valve wide open. After some head scratching and checking the sight glass after it had cooled, I decided to go ahead and add some hydraulic oil. When I did, the lift arms dropped a moment after the fluid had a chance to run down into the transmission. I assume the valve was starved for fluid. I added about a quart of fluid, which didn't alarm me because I had attached a brand new front hitch for the front blade immediately prior to using the tractor, and I assume some of that quart shortage was to fill the hoses and cylinders of the front hitch.

Good luck. I will post something when I hear something.

Ooops...just re-read your post. I did not receive a plastic cover for the mid pto either. I'm going to ask for one.
