As many of you may know I won the Everything Attachment build it yourself contest. We agreed upon a grapple for the L4240, it has a 3rd function. I know the grapple sizing always seems to be a big debate on here, some guys prefer a 48" while other prefer a larger. What do you guys recommend and why? First congrats on the win!I do have a L4240 and know what the 854 is capable of.I have a tooth-bar and a thumb and have found it very usefull.I think the smaller would be more than capable and no limit your ability to lift as much as a heavier one would.

Your smallest choice is 54".

Congrats on the win, and good luck on the build.

I asked Travis what the grapples weigh he said, "Weights are: 54" - 455 lbs., 60" - 472 lbs., 66" - 500 lbs., & 72" - 525 lbs. for the Construction Attachments compact grapples. The only one so far that we have a definite weight to publish is the 66" weighing 410 so you can count on ours being about 90 pounds lighter than the CA across the board." I think my bucket is 360 lbs. If I had the heavy duty bucket it would be 400 lbs. So if I went with the 72" it would be approximately 430 lbs. There is only 70 lbs difference between a 54'' and a 72'' grapple.

54 since thats the smallest they offer is what I would probably go with simply because my bucket is 60" dont know what yours is we have similar sized tractors, yours is a bit heavier though. For me a bigger bucket wouldn't help me one bit for what I do I dont think.(I can overload my front tires so easy its not funny as is) So yeah a 48-54 is where I would be happy I think anyway since you asked.

I don't have a tractor your size, but I would be inclined to stick with the 54" or 60" also. A grapple isn't like a bucket, it can be narrower than the width of the tractor. What you need to be able to do is pick things up and transport. So the lighter the grapple, the more material you can move at a time.

I would say it depends on your usage if your going use it to clear roots from the ground i would probably want to cover the front tires. If your just going to use it to move fire wood etc you probably don't need as wide. Only problem i could see with going to wide would be if you don't have the power or traction to push the grapple through roots

Thanks for the replies. I am leaning towards the 72" grapple. There is only 70lbs difference between the 72" and the 54" grapple. I don't think 70lbs will make that much of a difference. I will be using it to move and load brush, I may try it on removing some small trees (2-3" diameter), clearing roots, and maybe moving a log from time to time. Once it get it I am sure I will find all kinds of things to do with it. The tractor handles the 72'' bucket fine so I think it should handle a 72" as well.
