New to the board so give me a little slack... Root grapple vs. brush grapple? What makes them different? Is one more functional than the other? Can you use one style for brush and roots?

I haven't seen anyone commenting on how one grapple is for brush while another is for roots, but I'd imagine a grapple with longer, heavier tangs on the bottom would be what you'd need for pulling up roots while shorter tangs would work better with brush. (Brush might hang up on longer tangs while you're trying to dump it.) At least that's kind of how I see it.

Well, I'd hazard a reply or two...
Seems to me root grapple sellers are talking about a grapple w/lots of teeth, and the only people talkin' bout brush are the 'brush chrusher folks'...
I own a root grapple uninstalled. Waiting to fund the extra hydraulics. The "Brush Crusher' doesn't need a thousand dollars of 'improvements' on your new tractor.

Root grapples will do brush work, brush grapples will not do root work...

I think the terms are used loosely both by manufacturers and on TBN so you'd need to look specifically at each grapple to see how suitable they are for each task. In general to use a grapple for roots you need tines that are at least 6-8 inches longer than any cross bracing in order to dig them into the ground. The longer the "root" tines the more difficult it will be to pick up smaller sticks. A good example of a root grapple is the Millonzi. A good example of a grapple that is optimized for cleaning up brush and would not do quite as good a job with roots is the WRLong clamshell.

I have the WR Long "root" grapple. My local dealer had sold the same one before and the customer had good luck with it.
In my area I have more rocks and ledge than roots. It does do a good job with brush piles and moving logs etc. It is a light duty grapple which seams practical for my L3130. I did bend one of the outside tines one day when picking up a small log. I think it was sort of on an angle when I grabbed it. It will pick up a good size rock but it is difficult to pick up several rocks at one time. All in all, it works well.
