Blaze,

I heard about the fires in Florida. Looks like you folks need the wet stuff more than we do. Is your place wooded? Are your digs at risk?

Bird,

Sorry to hear about the wind damage. Was there widespread damage in your area, or did a freak blow just pick on your place? That system fell apart before it got to SE Louisiana.

We do have about 100 acres of pine trees nearby that could be cause for alarm if cinders from the other fires dropped in there, but other than that we should be okay.

Some good news, today at about 12:30 a rain shower moved through and gave the Division of Forestry a much needed assist. It only lasted 15 minutes but hey, we will take anything at this point.

It has been kind of interesting watching the DOF planes and helicopters dropping water and whatever else they drop on the fires. When this is all over we will miss the activity but certainly not the smoke and inconvienence of highways being closed.

It sounds like from reading the other posts that people all over are having weather related problems.

Since Jan 1, Florida has had over 2600 wildfires
This is not a good time to visit Disney World. The mouse would not want me to say that, but it's the truth.

No need to respond, just thought I would keep folks up to date on this unfolding story.

Boy Bird that must of been some wind. Sorry to hear about the damage. Up here they are calling for snow tomorrow night in the mountains and a high of 55 tomorrow. What's up with that? My parents just drove through Lebanon N.H. yesterday and there was snow on the side of the roads.
Boy what a crazy summer so far.
Hope everything works out!!!!
And for you people in Florida, hope you get all the rain you need to put out those fires!!!

Tdog (and Alan), no "serious" damage that I've heard about. A neighbor stopped by and told me if I thought I had a lot of limbs to pick up, I should see his yard (he has lots of very big old pecan trees in his yard). Our electrical power only went off a few times for a matter of seconds each time, but in town (20 miles away), half the city was without power for several hours.

Raining again today and possibly into Tues before it clears. Only 45 F on top of that. I guess we're out of the running for Another Dry Summer up here. I'm hopin' it doesn't turn into a wash out like last summer. Got all the plants out except for 100 pumpkin plants in between the rain showers all week long. When it finally cleared up there came a late killing frost./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif It was 40F degrees at 3:00 AM, 36 AT 4:30AM, so by 5:00 AM the floating row cover went over the plants and by 5:30 AM it was down to 30 F. It's a must have. Protects down to 28 F. The heavyweight stuff down to 26 F. Even using that the frost got to the patch of 4TH OF JULY tomatoes the wifes' stepdad had in./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif Between using that and the sprinklers everything else was OK./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Here's some pics the morning after the frost hit.

What a beautiful day it turned out to be.

DFB, that's a nice looking spot. Looks like you put in a ton of work - - can't believe you have to go into frost-protection mode in June. That goes beyond what I'd call a garden. Do you sell produce locally?

I sure wish you could send some rain this direction. Nothing here since the 0.2 in last Sat. That & one other light sprinkle was my total in May - - usually a very wet month in the New Orleans area. There have been a few showers around - - 5 in at the airport Thursday, but not a drop here. Guess that's what they mean when they say 'widely scattered'.

Tdog,

Thanks. Those pics are from down at the in-laws place. It's a full time business but essentially a mom and pop operation. About 20,000 plants plus sweet corn. There is a farmstand, contracts with 3 stores of a regional supermarket chain, and a produce wholesaler who supplies the local colleges and restaurants. My wife and I cover 2 farmer's markets, a food co-op, and deal direct to some local restaurants too.

June 1 is late for frost for sure.

I will gladly swap some rain for some heat./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
