another avoidable tragedy

KENTWOOD, LA - Tangipahoa Parish sheriff's deputies report a man died Sunday afternoon after getting trapped in a hay bailer.

According to a spokesman for the sheriff's office, Kenneth Bridges, 60, of Kentwood was oiling the cylinders on his bailer around 3 p.m. when a hydraulic line broke and pulled him in.

Bridges was pronounced dead at the scene.

Guys, please be careful. You never know when it could be you.

Like you said - avoidable, must have not used his safety catches, and those things WORK (at least they do on a Vermeer, I suspect they do on any make since that's their purpose) My mom borrowed a baler once, knowing how to operate and use it, but not much in the way of how it worked, etc. She tried to close the bale chamber after it had been worked on, not realizing the safety stop was still on the baler... it nearly tore itself apart....

Several years ago, not too far from here, a man was baling (big round bales) and was doing something that it turned out he shouldn't have... ended up he got caught up in the machine and it torn both his arms off at the shoulders. He walked to a neighbours and banged on the door for help, wife came out and **** near fainted! He was covered in blood and naked, except for his boots...did I mention his clothes were torn off also? He lived...apparently his arms having been torn off instead of cut off was what saved him. The arteries closed up a great deal because of being stretched past the breaking point. The guy that knew him and told me about him said he became kind of a bitter person after that...
