He lives in the mountains of NY (Catskills I would think) near the Hudson River between NYC and Albany near Saugertes.

I wasn't suggesting he was to blame. But, he did the right thing by jumping off and avoiding possible injury.

If it didn’t have some sort of emergency brake to stop the machine when the engine stalled, it’s likely because he bypassed the safeties. In that event, it wasn’t an accident, it was stupidly.

You’re making a bold assumption that it worked on a 50 year old crane. I’m pretty sure it happened on the first trip to his house when he bought it.
