My friend's 5510 got a new operator. A mouse crawled into the lower seat cushion & was happy..... until my friend sat down. The next weekend, we really knew about it.

We hosed it out via the bottom access hole, but there's no way to take the cushion apart and get to it.

I considered filling the seat with backing soda, but someone else suggested roasted coffee. I've read archaeologists use some species of beetle to eat the flesh off of skeletions, but doubt we have any such available.

We're going to see how much stink remains next weekend.

Peppermint oil sprayed on the tires and around the tractor is supposed to keep the mice away. My mom does it for her car.

Take the seat out of the tractor - take it to an upholstery shop. They will be able to take it apart - clean it up - put it back together. It will be good as new.

Believe me - unless properly cleaned there will alway be sufficient "smell" to attract more mice.

Just an hour ago - I finally caught the wood rat that has been building big nests in the engine compartment of my Jeep. Sound asleep - my Lab lets out a mighty set of barks - I quiet him down and can hear the thumping & banging out on the entry porch. My big 'ol Makita flashlight reveals - Mr Wood Rat, firmly caught in my, just purchased, rat trap. I finish him off with my shillelagh.

Its been a week now. He is very wily - I tried cheese, peanut butter, hot dog - but a chunk of fresh apple did the trick. Every morning - clean the big 'ol nest out of the engine compartment. He never chewed on anything but first chance I get I will clean the engine compartment at the local car wash.

It almost a certainty - he is the only rat around. They are very solitary but I take no chances - both traps have been reset with fresh chunks of apple.

BTW - FIELD OBSERVATION In an effort to ward off this wood rat - I stuffed about twenty clothes dryer sheets in a Purple Sack (Crown Royal) - it is and will continue to hang from the center cross brace running across the underside of the Jeep hood. After catching the rat this AM - went out and checked the engine compartment on the Jeep. He had built a nest of dry grasses as big and beautiful as ever - right under the hanging Purple Sack filled with clothes dryer sheets. I'm going to leave them - at least until I can wash the engine compartment at the local car wash - they smell pretty nice. They do NOTHING to ward off wood rats - in my particular situation.

A good outdoor cat is worth a lot.

Don't shoot your pet! The benefit outweighs the few songbirds a good mouser gets. Rats, mice are destructive, carry disease.

Need to encourage more snakes to hang around! No more rodent problem!

You're extremely misinformed...sure they kill some mice and rats...but it's way more than just a few songbirds...way more...like billions!
Cats that are left outside are more destructive to native wildlife than ANY other non native species of predator...
