I have a John Deere 3720 tractor on order. In my old New Holland TC33D I ran Amsoil HD 15-40 diesel oil in the engine. I also replaced the standard NH hydraulic oil with Amsoil hydraulic oil.

My question is, how does the JD Plus-50, 0W-40 match up against Amsoil?

I can't find any synthetic hydraulic oil from JD so I will probably go with Amsoil in that application.

Thanks
Bob

Both are good oils with Amsoil being the better of the two. The JD oil is a standard off the shelf oil while Amsoil is a specialty lubricants manufacturer and this type of lube manufacturer tends to have more robust additive packages in their lubricants.

The John Deere 0w-40 is a synthetic oil and the only oil that JD allows with extended oil drains while in warranty. (plus 50 hours)

John Deere is subject to the Magnuson-Moss warranty act like any other equipment manufacturer. They cannot dictate which oil to use for extended changes unless:

1) they supply the oil free

2) they change the oil free

ANY oil will work for extended changes, especially Amsoil.

Of course, for extended changes, it is always recommended that an oil analysis be used to verify oil is holding up. That would go for JD recommended oils as well.

They would have to prove that the oil caused the problem for a warranty to be voided because of extended drains. They are still obligated to honor any warranty due to malfunction of parts as stated in the Mag-moss warranty act. They cannot just disregard their obligation to honor warranty because they did not like the oil you used or the extended drain. If the dealer is unclear about this, Amsoil's legal department will gladly get them up to speed free of charge and explain their obligations.

Unless you use your tractor for any type of business. The Magnuson-Moss warranty act only covers CONSUMER use, not commercial/industrial use. Here is the section that makes that quite clear. So, if you use your tractor, equipment only for home use your covered. If it has anything to do with any type of business (you make any money with your equipment) then the Magnuson-Moss warranty act does not apply.

"Finally, the Act does not apply to warranties on products sold for resale or for commercial purposes. The Act covers only warranties on consumer products. This means that only warranties on tangible property normally used for personal, family, or household purposes are covered. (This includes property attached to or installed on real property.) Note that applicability of the Act to a particular product does not, however, depend upon how an individual buyer will use it."
