I cringe when i hear someone that (should) knows better refer to the AR style platform as an "assault' weapon...

just what we need.. give the anti gunners more mythology to chew on and glean from the internet...

As far as "black rifles" being sporty or not ... I guess it depends on what kind of sports you are interested in. I pretty much dabble in all the sports. If you do any of the 3-Gun competitions ... it's near impossible to be competitive without a "black rifle" (aka modern semi-automatic rifle). I like to do the He-Man 3-Gun competitions. .30 cal rifle, 12ga and 45 ACP. A bit pricy to do a match but a whole lot of fun! I have 3 different styles of semi-auto .30's that I use. Yea, they are all based on military designs (hey but some have wood!) and also use tricked out 12ga semi-auto shotguns.

I don't care if you are Lee Harvey Oswald with a bolt action, you aren't going to out-run or out-gun (you have to reload on the run - reloads are all timed - clock runs until you're done) someone with a black rifle in a 3-Gun match. Same goes with pump shotguns ... people do it (to have fun) but if you're competitive you'll be at the bottom of the list unless you have a semi-auto.

I used to be of the opinion that nothing matched a good bolt action rifle. I used to think it was impossible for a semi-auto rifle to keep up, much less best a bolt action. Well, after getting into various competitions, I've had to do a 180. I've seen AR platform rifles win bench rest competitions against VERY expensive custom bolt rifles (the AR's were custom too of course - and expensive) and against very experienced bench rest competitors.

I'm a big fan of the 6.5 Grendel (and 6.5x55 ... 6.5 anything really) and the ballistics on it are very impressive. Very efficient cartridge ... less powder and recoil ;)

I've recently (well, several years ago) gotten into predator hunting at night. The black rifle is great for this as it is easy to adapt bipods, lights, IR sights and/or illuminators, lasers, magnifiers etc. heck, some sights have everything I just mentioned in one unit plus it records what you see to share with others on youtube. Lots of hog hunt videos out there using these things. I can't easily do that kind of stuff with my Winchester M70's! (yes, I'm a square action - Mauser kind of guy rather than round 700 type actions).

edit: Oh, and black rifles are great for getting the "next generation" involved in shooting sports too. Jr. can't see the sights to be able to shoot ... no problem, press a button and collapse the stock, now Jr. has a big smile on his face!

It's all good. You shouldn't hold back your opinions ... different strokes for different folks. I like all firearms ... red ones, black ones, yellow ones ... ;)

Can you identify this rifle?

View attachment 468124

It's the original "scary black rifle" ... the "Right Arm of the Free World" ... it's an Argie I built from a brand new matching numbers parts kit ... not assemble like an AR ... it requires real gunsmithing to index barrel, brake, has to be headspaced etc. It's wearing a Burris TAC30.

This was it's first kill. Not the biggest deer but I didn't care. The women went shopping on "Black Friday" several years back and I brought "Black Friday" to the deer! :D What you see is the exit. Dropped her where she stood. Good ole Hornady 150gn GMX! So next time you hear Biden or Cuomo say "Who hunts with an assault rifle?" Well ... this guy! It's actually a Main Battle Rifle but those pinheads wouldn't know that ;)

p.s. For you that do know what this rifle is ... yes, it's 100% 922r compliant. And yes, that's a pistol grip from a M249 SAW :)

I had/have no idea. It has a pistol grip so it's not of interest to me at all. I don't do that stuff and never have. Pistol grips (except on a pistol) have no place in my realm of sporting firearms.

Which is EXACTLY why I prefer to read and not post on this thread. If it weren't for that style of firearm, there wouldn't be all this hoopla over guns in the mefia and in the government... Think about that.

I own no platforms that even vaguely resemble the assault type rifle and don't want any. No need, no want.

I fully support 2A and the right to own SPORTING firearms for hunting, informal target practice but that will never include the 'pray and spray' style of rifle that people seem to hold dear, for whatever reason, I have no idea and don't really want to know....about.

Na, you've been around long enough ... you know they would just find/create another boogie man ... like large sugar drinks, bathrooms (oops, this is going political and we can't do that here).

I respect your position and am cool with it. If you try to tell me I shouldn't have them and my definition of "sporting" needs to comport to yours then I have a problem ;) But you're not doing that so all's well.

5030, you don't have a M1 Carbine, Garand or M1A???

You can't spray and pray with anything except with something that's on the NFA list and that costs lots of $$$.

Surely you don't believe the 2A is limited to sporting use, hunting and target practice.

Gaaack.. You are saying assault rifle again!?!

Unless we are talking a Sturmgewehr 44, the others are simply semi automatic weapons.

A sturmgewehr is about the only legitimate gun you should use the "assault" term on. Because it I quite literally a 'storm' or assault rifle.

Assault weapon / rifle is a made up media bonanza term..
