While near Jacksonville this weekend, we stopped at Academy. Got 80 ends of Tula 7.62x39, and 20 rnds of 7.62x54r. Prices where great on 7.62x39, around $0.2395/round, and OK on the 7.62x54r, around $0.485. Selection was basically FMJ from company A, B, C, or D, with the over whelping range of 122 gr all the way to 124 gr for the 7.62x39. They had no 154 Sp in x39, and I was hoping for some 204 gr SP in x54R, but no luck. I'll have to double check what the 7.62x54r Monarch was, think it was right around 150-160 grain, and it was FMJ as well, steel cased.

It turns out that Academy seems like a pretty good place to pick up ammunition. On their online site, as long as you order $25 or more, shipping is free. I've already gotten some that I ordered earlier in the week. The have had good priced .22 lr ammunition as well ($2.19 to $2.69/box of 50 or $17.99/box of 325). There limit was 2 little boxes or 1 bulk box, but you can combine by getting 2 @ 2.19, 2 @ 2.69, and 1 @ 17.99 and end up getting 525 rounds for 5.3 cents per round (plus applicable tax, of course) - I think that's the new normal price now.

I guess, though, if you live someplace where Fedex won't drop it off and you have to sign for it, it could be troublesome.

I will definately continue to purchase ammo from Academy so long as there free shipping policy continues.

Good luck and take care.

My oldest son has one of those Bushmaster AK style rifles that shoots the 5.something and the 7. something or other shells, I don't remember right now. He had the rod bend that has something to do with the ejection mechanism and had to replace it. I was reading online that the steel cased ammo was not good for this type of gun. That others had the same problem because the steel cases were so hard compared to the brass type. I wonder if other type of semi-auto guns would have this type of problem with the steel casing? I mean if it is shot a lot. Him and his friends will get together and shoot off a hundred rounds in a very short time so maybe that has something to do with it getting too hot. I guess I am wondering if the steel casing really is harder on a firearm?

If anyone was was considering buying any Federal American eagle 22lr ammo beware that the bunch of crooks only package 40 rounds per box.

I shoot way more steel case than brass case, and all I can say is that I haven't had any problems with it in anything .... yet. If I ever see any damage because of it, I might change my habits, but I doubt it.

Compared to competition or even serious recreational shooters, I don't shoot much at all, so I'm sure that's a factor, too. If someone runs thousands of rounds through something, I'm sure they will have more wear and tear than someone like me.

Good luck and take care.

very possibly repeated internet myth that used to have some possibility of truth, coupled with manufacture CYA type info.

A while back you used to be able to get laq coated steel cases.

I've never had it hapen to me.. but I guess if you are on a crew served weapon and just constantly feed ammo to your gun so that the barrell glows dull red and the hadguards smoke or melt.. then yeah.. you can get some laq xfer in the chamber.

I havn't seen laq ammo in a while.. mainly zinc or poly coat.

That said.. I don't usually fire my gun like I'm defending a beachhead at normandy from invasion by the allies.

I think most of these issues are over-reported, then spread. ( IMHO )

Using steel case in SKS or AK presents not problems I've experienced. I even shoot in some 1911's with no issue.

Havn't had it out on a hunt yet, but was thinking it might be good for dangerous game.. like ... tyrannosaur ;)

Seriously though.. I picked it up and a 416 rigby, and a 375HH for a safari hunt that just hasn't occured yet.

Only thing it has shot was paper.. and believe me.. the paper was dead.. :) Dropped on the spot. didn't have to track it any... took out the target frame too. ;)

416 Rigby was always one of the callibers I wanted for a very long time. Then the 416 Ruger came out and it sounded like an even better round!!! But after going on two safaris to Africa and one hunting trip to New Zealand, I've found that it's so much easier and nicer to use the guns they have there then going through all the issues of traveling with them. I've also heard to many stories of guns being messed with, or lost for a week from friends who hunt Africa that it has proven this to be a good theory. I'll bring my own rifle for trips in the US, but not overseas.
