As HayDude mentioned it's a bear finding young farm labor that can put their phone down. I pay cash by the day and IME it's even harder to get someone to come back a second day. I've wondered if they only needed enough $$ to pay their phone bill before it got switched off.
If I have a new worker I don't expect to spend a whole shift demonstrating what to do if they won't grab a shovel and join me. All are offered to operate a tractor, man lift, or the mini-BH vs hand dig, rake, etc, but that takes two hands too, so no one accepts the option.
Maybe I'm too cheap. I'll pay $25/hr for help checking/airing-up tires, greasing machinery, rotating battery maintainers, operating a tractor, BH, or man-lift, ground observer when I'm in the bucket, etc but can't find takers. IMO entitled kids want a 'position' with bennies, not to have to necessarily 'work' to earn their pay. If they don't see an income stream they can't stay interested.
