Amazon created a concrete shortage

RK took over our closed Walmart building and I shop there all the time. In fact I will be shopping at that RK today. It was a small Walmart and when they closed it, they opened a Super Center about 3 blocks away.

I have no problem waiting a week or so for an Amazon order. I think people are spoiled these days. I remember waiting a month or more for catalog orders depending on what it was. Does anyone remember ordering things from the back of a cereal box and waiting 6-8 weeks for delivery?

It seems like if I happen to not go to town for week, I'm even more glad to get home. I understand why folks take the main road out of town for 30 miles, turn left and go another 20, drop an X and build a house.

With no order confirmation, shipping notification or tracking. If it hadn't come in 4 or 5 weeks, then was the time to start investigating. Less than that, just could've been in the pipeline.
You're right, we have become spoiled.

Spoiled in most everything. Instant gratification society.

I just hate seeing a well balanced community destroyed by greed and bad decisions by a few. I could give a damn if packages arrive earlier if the cost is heavy traffic and foolish drivers.
Things were a lot less crowded in the 1960s but the US population was 183,000,000. Now the population is 330.000.000. I guess those 147,000,000 extra people have to live and work somewhere.
Here is the list of Walmarts that closed.....10 were supercenters.

Is Your Wal-Mart Closing?
The byline in the article gives a date of January 15, 2016 as the date the article was updated, no telling when the article was originally written. Basically it's old news. More recently they closed a bunch of Sam's Club stores in the west but these stores were redundant.

What is your basis for that statement? There’s no decline in Amazon’s business in sight. In fact it is increasing.

Just look at the empty (or almost) malls around the country....

I think governments all over the world will try to tamp down Amazons clout a bit too at some point

Already a problem with vacant Walmart stores. The Wals won't sell because they are afraid someone else will open a big box store, so there they sit, huge buildings surrounded by acres of asphalt parking lots.

Down Toledo way, they levelled them and are parking vehicles on the lots waiting for chips...

What does an empty mall have to do with Amazon distribution?

I think the point trying to be made is that all retailers come and go and leave huge empty buildings behind eventually. They are predicting Amazon will be no different in X years (no one knows when).

Malls, k-marts, shopco, jc penney, Montgomery Wards, sears, radio shack, toys r us, ........lots of things change...and will continue to change.

All those stores that have been mentioned lasted more than a lifetime. So maybe Amazon has another 60+/- years before it goes defunct too? It’s probably a little premature to worry about what happens to the building after it closes.

a better question is.....what DOESN'T it have to do with Amazon. Look closely and think hard......

It has nothing to do with Amazon failing and abandoning their distribution center.

Almost every business ends at one time or another. Why is this even a discussion?

Most local retailers demise is of their own fault. Small businesses still operate as if it’s 1970. They are closed when I drive to work in the morning, and closed when I drive home in late afternoon. So I shop at Wally World and other big boxes because they are actually open in the evenings when I have time to shop. I hear the same story from many other folks. Busy people often don’t have time to shop during the hours of 8-5. We can’t buy anything from a business that is closed.
They don't have the lobby power. It's all tied to a social construct. I'd argue that we need to look more at where society is heading than at business models.

Try living in the PNW where there are so many many projects demanding every cement truck AND the cement workers are on strike.

Cities are already looking at that to fill the gap from vacant office and retail space.
Yeah. That's cities. Amazon distribution centers tend to be outside city cores: I have no opinion on this.
