Aluminum Air Compressor\'s And A Note To Owners

Yesterday my aluminum two stage air compressor made by Devilbiss blew a head gasket. This information is for anyone owning an aluminum compressor. Check your head bolts to make sure they are tightened down. Out of 6 bolts on the head, only 3 of them were tight. The other 3 were snug. The owner of the service center where I bought my new gaskets told me that is normal for these compressors. He said that they loosen up over time. Yep, Jim, and another problem I've seen with those compressors is when the owner opens the oil fill plug, sees oil down in there, and thinks it's OK. Unfortunately, it's a very shallow oil sump and needs to be filled all the way up just to the point of overflowing, or it may not have enough and will burn up the compressor.

Oops, let me add that I've only seen that on the single stage, but two cylinder, DeVilbiss; have no experience with their two stage compressors, so the above paragraph may or may not apply.

Hi Bird, The two stage has an oil fill line haflway up the glass. I keep mine filled almost to the top also. Especially since it is a splash type oiling system.

Jim maybe it don't apply but be sure that is the recommended level. With a splash system to much is as bad as not enought

OK, Jim, forget what I said above. That one obviously has a deeper sump and half way on the sight glass would be correct.
