My L4200's alternator/fan belt was running pretty loose - I also discovered that it is in horrible shape, but replacing it is for another day. At any rate, I snugged it up a bit, but didn't want to go too far and stress the alternator/fan pulley bearings. What should I use as a gauge to set the belt tension, and how tight should it be?

thanks - JayC

This alternator is a relatively low output compared to a car... It dose not need to be as tight.

If you can turn, (slip) the alt pulley with a bit of effort by it's cooling fan it is tight enough. There is no need to stress the bearings. There is very little drag on the belt when putting out it's maximum. KennyV
