alternator belt

I have a jd2040 that the alternator belt can not be tighten further. it is at the end of the strap . the belt is not brand new but not a year old. the belt is from JD dealer
correct numbers on belt

Possibly wear on the pulley's over the years caused the belt to be loose? R73784 is the belt part no., right?

jd catalog - # is t-20334 but now they sub #R97758 . the number you gave is different . lol now i am confused

1st thing that needs to be established is your tractors serial number & if your tractor has a 3 or 4 cylinder engine. Then the correct part number for fan belt can be chosen. Part # T20334 which subs to R97758 is for 2040 with 3 cyl engine below serial # 349,999. Fan belt for 2040 with 3cyl engine after serial # 350,000 is R73784. PS: I sold 2040 3 cyl tractors when they were NEW.

my tractor is under the serial #3449*999 ,maybe you tell me what the lever on right side under seat is.there are slots ,i belive there are 4 dents or holes

R97758 is correct fan belt for 2040 <SN 349.999 with 3 cyl engine. Lever under seat is for draft control on 3 pt hitch. D=depth,L=load,L/D=setting in between L & D IE less sensitive than L

this is offshorerivas with the 2040 loose alternator belt . the numbers on the belt are correct and go with the serial # under 349-999 what do you belive could be
the reason for the belt to be loose . It is tightened to the end of the strap .

How many hours are showing on tractor speed-hour meter? Does the back of belt extend out past the belt pulley's when belt is installed? Have you checked number on belt not just on the cardboard holder?

the speed-meter does not work . the number on belt is correct for this tractor .
if i am understanding what you are saying the belt does not extend past metal strap that is used to bolt alternator when tightened . now that i am explaining this, could it be that metal strap was replaced with a different size.?

I'll rephrase my question. When belt is in the V of the pulley does back of belt sit level/above pulley or below pulley sides? Backside of belt below pulley sides indicates worn out pulley's thus belt won't be tight enough. If bottom of pulley V is shiny that a dead give away that belt is riding too far down in pulley & belt is slipping in pulley.

The substitution number is actually 1/2" longer than the original T20334 belt. Original belt is 48" long and R97758 is 48.504". According to Deere, the original is still available but it is only stocked in Germany. Should still be able to get it, but will take a while to ship. Ask your parts person to override the substitution and order the original number. Or you could source a 48" belt from auto parts store possibly. Width is listed as .688" and thickness at .406".

May I ask how you looked up the spec's for T20334? I understand if one enters part # in JD parts shopping cart then left click on part # in cart that part spec's can be viewed on some selected parts.

I wonder too. It seems more and more parts no longer have specs listed other than weight.

The dealer access includes a system called Parts Expert. It has more specs listed than system available to public. Many times if part is obsolete, the spec is wiped out from dealer view also. Since the T20334 is still available from European warehouse, the spec is still listed luckily.
