Alternator belt breaks...car will go how far on battery?

I had to do it while relocating my alternator (installing on board air compressor in my jeep) I was pretty sure I got the size right or the V belt but I didnt - took it to the town on battery and spend time trying different belts in front of the shop.

As almost everybody mentioned already - my main concern was the fuel injection, since it needs over 11.5V to run.

But I have dual batteries in my jeep - one is for starting and daily use and the other one for accessories and I can give a boost to myself

Last summer, 1987 Acura Integra- alternator brushes were worn out so the batt light came on.

Drove 1.5 hours on interstate in the dark, when the lights were getting dim I pulled into a fast food restaurant and payed a high school kid $10 to give me a 30 minute extended jump start (I knew his alternator and running engine would charge my battery up pretty good in 30 minutes). I unplugged one of my headlights to save the battery and drove another half hour in the dark with no problems. I then stopped and bought a battery charger at a walmart and charged up in their parking lot. This allowed me to drive another hour and get home and fix the alternator.

The alternator went out on my fuel injected '88 F150 at 4 a.m., after pulling over and disconnecting one of the headlights, I continued the 180 mile drive without any further problem.

Once I showed the store manager that I was buying a $45 battery charger from his store and explained my situation, he ran an extension cord across the steel bar fencing of the lawn/garden department for me to park beside and plug in to right next to the building. This was about 10pm so the parking lot wasn't at all crowded. It was the store in Paducah, KY.

There are lots of nice folks down here in the south

My 300D Mercedes would have run a long, LONG way without an alternator. It didn't need electricity for the engine to keep running.

I know you asked about cars, but my dad had an old belarus tractor and the alternator never worked after the first year he had it. We'd just charge the battery every couple of months and it would be good for 20-30 starts.

That's funny, that's exactly where we are on an old International 444. Instead of replacing the battery though, we just do a recharge every now & then when it starts turning over slower.

Must be something about great minds thinking alike....
