Alternatives to John Deere 110 TLB?

Looking for a 110 TLB for the following reasons: I like that it's a TLB, I like the ability to use skid steer attachments, and retain 3pt hitch / PTO for implements.

What other brands/models should I be looking for? I don't want to just slap a backhoe on a farm tractor. Thanks!

Yep, the JD110 was about the cutest TLB ever. You may want to skip down to the JD forum here on TBN and do search a few threads to get some idea of how used ones are holding up.

The other two in that same wt/hp/option class are both recent enough that you can find good examples of other brands/models with a little luck. They are the Yanmar CBL40 and the Kubota L39. Both are arguably heavier built and more durable than the JD110. None of the above have emissions controls. All had optional 3pt and PTO.

The Kubota L39 is no longer built - although Kubota still builds a smaller TLB and two larger TLBs. New TLBs are crazy expensive. Used ones are often ex-rentals. That L39 was a favorite, and had a model run from 2005 to about 2015. If you find one of those, grab it.

The Yanmar CBL40 model run was started about 2007 and there are rumors that there are some good onew ones till to be found.... but I've not seen one.

I've got a Kubota L-47 and like it a lot. It only has appx. 350 hours on it and I use it mostly for backhoe/loader/fork/grapple work and have been very happy with it's performance. I did get the 3 point hitch kit with it but have not used that to this point.

I choose to buy the correct 4 point attachment to mount a backhoe on a tractor.
I remove it maybe twice a year when the tractor needs to do something else.
It digs as well as any TLB I ever ran but it has a short reach so moves are less than 9’.
So, for me anyway, having another motor with old leaky hoses to maintain for about 3 or 4 days of use per year-
Or,
Having another attachment that will serve my needs.

A local small town just sold it's old full size JD310 backhoe/FEL. Our state requires that all municipal machines be sold at public auction. That well maintained old machine went for peanuts. Hope their new one works half as well.

That beats slapping a backhoe on a farm tractor, that's an inexpensive way to get a backhoe for occasional use, but it didn't have the SSQA or 3pt you are looking for. You still need a farm tractor.

For my place, I bought a used 2WD New Holland 555E backhoe that's done everything I've wanted. I think it's better to have a dedicated digging machine, like a backhoe or excavator, then trying to do everything with just one machine. For almost 20 years, I just had the backhoe and a small 37hp tractor for mowing and 3 point attachments. I now have three tractors for doing farm things, but only use two of them. The small 37hp tractor has just been sitting for the last couple of years. I'm going to put the 6 foot cutter on it and use it for small areas, but with the 12 foot batwing on my bigger tractor, there's no rush.

Having the backhoe ready to go, anytime I need it is what makes it so useful. Trees fall down in the Spring from thunder storms. Animals pass away and need to be buried. Trenches need cleaning out so water goes where I want it from the storms. The backhoe is also very good at pulling me out when I get stuck!! But most of the time, I use it for digging out trees so I can increase the size of my pastures, of clear open areas for my fence. Trees too close to a fence will destroy it over time. My goal is to remove every tree that's 50 feet away from my fence. Having a backhoe means that I can do that when I have the time, and not have to change anything. I can mow one day, take out trees the next, or do both in the same day!!!!

Absolutely. The economic advantage to renting a backhoe as needed to dig ditches rather misses the point of having a hoe. It's not a tractor; it's something other.

For the farm or rural person with land, trees, and animals - having a backhoe right at hand for instant use as a combination mobile crane and digger saves a ton of time. Older used 2wd ex-industrial backhoe/loaders are powerful, cheap, and plentiful. For farm use they last forever. They are made to live outdoors, & can sleep behind the barn until needed.

Ours sleeps with a battery tender and a block heater on a thermostat. We start it a few times a year...

I dont think I've ever seen a JD-110 without the hoe on it. The honest review I've heard from people (mind you, this is utility work, guys that either used to have someone like a Cat-304 and a skid, or a JD-310 type set up); the hoe is quite strong and very usable, not remotely in the class of a tractor mounted hoe or a weird front hoe on a skid steer. The JD-110 as a skid steer replacement, or a loader, or even moving material; a dog. Now, keep in mind what these guys are doing, they are loading trucks, doing service connections, hydrant relocation, and often dealing with concrete or asphalt. So, for a home owner/misc tractor work guy, the loader may not be a weak point.

Apparently the JD-110 either does have a PTO, or can be equipped with one?

Also, it doesn't have the road speed of a full sized TLB, but it's not too bad. Frankly, 16 mph is about the fastest I want to drive a back hoe or loader on roads.

The tree guys down the road from me bought a new JD 110 without the hoe back when JD was still selling the 110s. He has a Gannon box blade with hydraulic scarifiers on it. He just wanted a smaller heavy duty tractor for clean up I guess.
They still have it as well as several other pieces of equipment.

When I worked for a small commercial builder, the son had down sized, and kept an older JD 310 (with back hoe sticks, but track hoe pattern), and a couple other small, low resale items, like towable water tanks, towable 250gal fuel tanks, concrete saws, plate tamp, ect; but didn't keep transport truck. We would road run the 310 a where within about 30 miles; and just paided a tow company to transport further. A rubber tired hoe is rarely the right tool for any job, but given the time, it can do almost anything, within its lift capacity

Kubota M59 is good choice for a JD110. Strong, capable, not too big, 3pt , pto. Ours is used 90% of the time 3pt mode. Mainly because the B26 size fits in tight spots and perfect size for utility maintenance and landscaping. Both are easy to switch from backhoe to 3pt. M59 3pt arms are a little heavy but have my technique honed to help the old man.

One of the key features of the 110 is the creep function. This is a rocker switch that allows creeping forward or reverse movement of the tractor. It is easily accessed from the backhoe operation station. After using this. I would miss not having this feature. Do any of the Kubotas have this?
