Have any of you installed a block or engine heater? I'd like to know what worked well and was easy to install.

I just bought one of those Katts 300 watt magnetic block heaters. Going to try it out this weekend.

The 8560 has a 3/4 inch pipe plug just above the starter to install a block heater. Katts makes a 400 watt heater that will screw right in. Works great.

Thanks OldGin sounds like what I need. You saved me lots of time out in the cold trying to figure out what to get. Do you have to pull the starter to get it in?

No, you won't have to. I just take the plug out and screw the heater with a wrap of teflon tape on it in. Leave the cap on the radiator so the system can't get air and you lose maybe a pint of coolant.

You might also have to flip the mounting plate so the heater does not bottom out against the block.

The only heater that I could find local was a 750 watt with a element maybe 2 inches long. I bought it with the understanding that I could take it back if it wouldn't fit. I got the plug
out and tried to check the depth the best I could and thought it would go. I put thread tape on it and tried to start the threads but it was too close to the starter.so I pulled the block which has the heater hose coming out of the top. I screwed in the heater so a flat side lined up with the starter. When I tried to fit the block with heater back into the hole the heater hit the cylinder. At this point I couldn't take the heater back so I clamped a cresent wrench in the vice and tightened it on the element next to the fitting. I used another wrench to put a bend in the element. I figured that they bent it at the factory so it was worth a try. I put it back together and it cleared ok. I had to grind the outside of the aluminum nut that holds the wire in to clear the starter. Works great. 750 watts heats fast.
