Almost a road kill

Almost made a road kill this morning. 2 feet in front of my jeep, cross the road, climbed tree, jumped over the fence and kept running. Weird deer you think?

It was a black bear, the time was 11AM and it was a normal small road in Northern Virginia.

BTW, bear in full speed is a beautiful animal - if you watch him from a car

He or she made a lasting impression on me. It was like watching really good martial artist - the fluidity of movement and the evident weight and mass in full speed was amazing.

I have seen a few bears but never from so close. I almost had a "meeting" with a moose once. I rounded a curve and she was trotting in the other lane as any well behaved moose that is versed in traffic rules. Had she been on my side of the road I would have hit it doing about 55mph. When I realized what happened I had to stop to calm my nerves a little. Nothing like that kind of a wake up during a late night drive home.

The local paper had a story today that said there are over 4,000 car accidents with deer in November. November has 1/5 of the accidents with deer in NC.

A guy on a motorcycle hit one and died recently. Late last week there was a car accident with a deer. The car went off the road into some water and a 2-3 year old drowned.

Sure see a lot of wildlife on the roads here in Sussex County, VA; especially this time of year. Haven't seen a bear yet though!

One of the most vivid memories or my teen years was riding in a car with my dad driving in Eastern Pennsylvania.

There was a meadow on one side of the road and as we drove by it a deer broke out of the woods on one side and ran the length of the meadow with grace and fluid motion.

A black bear followed the deer, running awkwardly, looking like he had stilts on his legs and springs in them.

At the beginning of the chase the deer was about 100 yards in front of the bear. 1/2 mile later he was only 50 yards in front...

This afternoon picking up my last game cam behind Karl's 3/4 way upon the ridge saw big..BIG bear in the oaks...seen alot of bears this year Rudsboro valley.

This morning about 7:45 I was driving to work and I saw a bunch of flashing lights in the median.

Got closer and there was a bunch of fire trucks and an ambulance in the middle of the road. They had formed a U shape around a single car that had made it to a turn lane. It was hard to see but it looks like the car hit a deer....

On the windshield. :confused2:

Windshield held but it was shattered. I think I could see the deer in front of the car. It looks like the car hit the deer a few hundred feet prior to where the car was able to get off the main travel lane and when the car stopped the deer rolled off the hood.

A few 1/4 mile down the road I saw a guy either Monday or late last week on the side of the road. He had is sleeves rolled up and he was cutting up a dear. Had to have been road kill.
