Allow hunting. . . very inclined to say no.

We received a very nice letter requesting permission to hunt turkey's on our property with a bow and arrow - he provided references and all. I agreed to meet with him. We met yesterday. Very nice guy - apparently an experienced out-doors guy. I kind of wanted to help him out. I initially indicated that if we did permit it there would be a number of conditions which I listed. He agreed. So, I told him it would be okay but I would require him to sign a waiver and agreement acknowledging the conditions. He agreed. As he left he said he and a friend would also use shotguns at times, and wanted to set up a hunting stand - actually near our pond which is somewhat near the house, and wanted to come by this Sunday. I guess the suddenness of that sort of hit me with reality - we maintain a rather quiet and private existence here - this Sunday would be different! And concerned that this could 'grow' into his making this into a weekend destination-getaway for him and his friends. Easier to not start it up now rather than end it later when issues may arise.

Anyway, despite initially indicating my willigness to allow this with conditions (notifying us in advance, letting us know when he came on and when he left, etc.), I have rethought this. We would at times need to modify how we live to accommodate this. He would hunt on weekends which is when we hike the property, run with the dog, have guests over, take the tractor out to manage back road tasks, and sort of enjoy the peace with the family. There are animals around. I like to go go about anywhere on the property whenever I want to - his hunting and stands would be a hindrance, and not sure I want gun shot noise even if rare. And although my property insurance may not be affected - I don't want to take that chance.

I can think of many reasons not to do this and only one reason to do so, so I guess I am not really asking if I should do this as I am sort of certain I will call him to say, sorry, but no. Just asking for general advice and support for my decision - given that I already told him yes and now need to call him and say no.

Absolutely not on my property. I just dont want to deal with any downstream issues. I would just tell him you discussed it further with your family and everyone just wasnt comfortable with it.

agreed He was playing on kindness then when the door was open he barged in
funny how often we see people like that. I think they see kindness and mistake it for weakness. Like the guy who bumbs a cigarette, then asks for a second one "fer behind my ear".

In Oregon, "No Hunting" means no hunting. Anybody caught hunting on the property gets cited, no exceptions, including the landowner. You can also post property with "Posted: Hunting By Permission Only," with your name and phone number so the game warden can verify the permission.

No signs mean the property owner doesn't care, though trespass laws still apply.

My friends only and they care for the property like it's their own.

I also tell two good neighbors that they can hunt on my property when it's close to theirs... but they have their own places and they do lots of food plots and such, so my place is a downgrade for them.

In the beginning, after buying my property, I needed to drill and blast a trench for the water line. Signed with the Co-op to get power. They sent a jerk out who was mad he had to walk 800 ' with me into the woods after he ask where the house was going to be. Told me NO power until I get an investment like a water line installed. HOW? This is all rock. He said just lay the line on the ground and cover it will 6" dirt. Then I will do it. Went to talk with his boss. Found they had to put in power, I was a Co-OP member.

THEN - the same jerk was sent back to have me sign the easement permission form. I told him I would get that back next week. THAT made him mad - again.

I took the form to my attorney - had him write all over it - They could ONLY be on my property to maintain my power line, nothing else. Turned it in.

Two years later, the same jerk contacted me. They wanted to develop power somewhere behind my property. Asked me for permission to cross my land with power line. He said it would cost an extra 25K to go around. I told him, well, I guess that is the price of hiring people like you to do business. Remember all the door slamming and crap you dished out when I asked for power? Go around. I hope they fire you.

One time his boss can out to check the power drop. I was visiting with him. He was nice. He told me "I don't know, sometimes he is just that way. I told his boss, one is good about him - What is that? I said, He works for you and not for me. Thank God. He is your problem, not mine.

Four years after that, the neighbor built a new house. He was told they couldn't put in power unless I agreed. It was coming off my line. I did sign that release. I don't sign blanket releases anymore.

I think it is important to know who is on your land and what they are doing.
I recently bought a property that has easements all over it , underground power . water to the neighbors , power poles to other neighbors ,, and a 30' street easement that while it should be shared between adjoining properties is all on my side ,

looks like the previous owner could not say no to the utility companies ,, I would have told them to keep their utilities within the existing street easement and would have never let them move inside that boundary
luckily this is all on a lot next to our main home and we only bought it so we did not have to deal with idiots ,, lol
