Allis Chalmers B hydraulic pump problems

I recently replaced the pto unit on my AC B tractor because of a broken end on the shaft. I swapped my existing hydraulic pump on the replacement unit. after all was complete, the hyd. lift will not work now. I have checked to make sure the cams on the pto are making contact with the pump and the pump operated properly before the replacement. I'm at a loss now so I'm looking for any advice on here.

Ball and spring must be inside

Ball and springs in unit are all in place. Any other suggestions?

Wonder if the pump needs to be primed? Surely someone would know, if not, give the ole boys on the allis board a shot. Nothing but Orange over there.
