Hey Josh... does topo maps have anything to do with those guys who fly around the state taking overhead pics of townships, sections, and quarters?

My brother is in the Coast Guard at D.I. and Mobile. He knows a guy that takes those pics. My brother's name is John Parker.

Also have a very good friend (his mother works with me) who lives in Theodore... he's the preacher at Bellingrath church of Christ.

SonnieP,
The Topo Surveys I do are usually for the state or cities down in south Florida We go out and locate everything like power poles, signs, roads, walkways, and edge of water. The crews use a collector that picks up elevations and northing and eastings. Then basically I connect the dots. Then I can add the elevations to the locations that they have located. The survey crews try to locate points in places to give a good representation of elevation changes.

We do not put the aerial photos on there but I have used a program that allows us to overlay the photos on a drawing. Have you been to:
Google Maps
They use those photos and overlay them on maps. It is pretty neat.

We use to buy tickets at the Goldmine in Daphne back when I had a ticket brokerage. A lady by the name of Joanne Burrage (husband Dan Burrange owns car lot down in Florida) use to buy them for me. They lived in Spanish Fort.

Also familiar with Centerpoint... when I was with TranSouth we finance for couple of car dealers up there. I can't remember who all they were, but I visited up that way a good bit.

Those Google maps are neat... pulled my road right up and they are extremely detailed. I like how you can simple click the direction arrows and move around the map. Thanks for that link.

Hello Folks,
I am a new member, I found this site through the "Homesteading Today" forum last week. I recently moved out to the country and need a tractor to maintain my driveway and do some bush-hogging. The last tractor I used was my granddad's old Ford about twenty years ago so I have some catching up to do in the tractor world.

SonnieP - We are neighbors, I live outside of Henderson about halfway between Luverne and Troy.

BamaRob - I believe we went to school together in T-town. As I recall we once spent a day looking for stands of hemlock trees in northwest Jefferson county. Boy, time flies.

Take care,
Billy

Welcome to the forum Billy! Glad to see someone else from my neck of the woods join in. I stumbled across this forum while lookin' for a tractor myself.

Go up through Glenwood to My Country Store, hang a right on CR57 and don't stop... cross over Hwy 29, cross over CR59, onto New Harmony Road (dirt road)... once you go by New Harmony Baptist Church on the dirt road you'll take a left onto Cedar Creek Road... down the hill and back up... go past a brick house on right at the top and the next driveway on right is ours. There will be 2 mailboxes at the road... our house sits way back off the road.

You are welcome to come look at our tractor anytime. You can even see what a wonderful job it did on the field in front of our house.

Come soon enough and you can help me finish my 24' X 36' semi barn.

Well I'll be! How are ya, Billy? It truly is a small world isn't it?

After grad school (before completing MS /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif), I took a job in Huntsville with a defense contractor where I stayed for 4 years. Then, got a job with a timber/paper company in T-town and was there for 7 years. When I moved back, I finished up my MS (had to take 6 credit hours that I had let expire and write two research papers... all while working full-time /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif). They recently sold the papermill in Demopolis and all of the assests related to it. Laid a bunch of us off. I started 8/1 as a programmer with a steel manufacturer in T-town. Not doing GIS work anymore, but I'm enjoying it nontheless. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I often think of you. Anytime I go through Forestdale by that shopping center parking lot where we met up that morning to go look at the hemlock trees. And, anytime I hear about Village Creek flooding (pretty often) on the news, I think about our little hike/adventure out there.

I've only got ~6 hours on my new Mahindra 2615 4WD. But, from my experience so far, I can definitely recommend this tractor if it is sized right for your uses.

I'm getting old, and my memory isn't what it used to be. Were you in the Geography program at UA my first time through ('93-'94) or my second time through ('98)?

Later,

BR
