Air Filter - outer only or inner ?

What is the final word on the air filter? After searching past posts it seems that some of the early tractors may have had an outer and an inner filter but that the factory eventually switched to using only the outer filter.

Is that what everyone is doing or are some people using bith filters?

I have a 4940c that I purchased in May of 2007. It only had the out air filter but I have purchased and installed the inner. The hay fields are dusty and I wanted all the protection I could get.

Originally they came with inner/outer but a couple years ago it was determined that only outer was required. With only the outter they determined you get a bit better performance with no risk of any problem. This was sent out in a bulletin.

I changed mine the other day and there were two filters - one inside the outer one. I just bought the outer one, but since the inner one looked brand new I just shoved it back in the new outer filter. Maybe I will try running just the outer and see if I can tell a difference in how the tractor runs. The outer filter seemed to be doing a good job because the inner filter was spotless.
