Air compressor froze up, opinions on my options

Your little pancake compressor will take "forever" to fill that larger tank. The duty cycle of the little compressor would then come into play. Other than that everything should work just fine. On your larger compressor, it could be frozen as you say or you could have just lost a motor capacitor. They do fail from time to time.

I had a bad cap (lead corroded off from the electrolyte leaking) in my old compressor a few months ago. Gave the impression of being froze up when trying to start, but the pulley still was able to turn on the compressor. Got a replacement from Amazon at not much money. Match the values on the old one and the dimensions.

What I got, yours may be different......

Motor is fine...compressor is froze solid. Thought of opening it up, but not going to waste the time. It is an oiled compressor, and oil was a bit low. Pretty sure the compressor part is gone. It's turn cold winter weather here today....and most likely I won't do anything until spring. Working in an unheated barn in cold winter is not my thing. 20 years ago I would replace with a larger one in a heartbeat, but these days in older age....dunno. I bought that pancake compressor back when I had a large fifth wheel. It would barely fit into the 'basement' of the trailer. I aired near tractor trailer type tires on it to 110lbs without issue, just a tad slower than at a shop. So it may come down to how I feel in the spring. I may have an excuse for a battery power impact wrench.

I would NOT want to be without my air compressor. ...

For my 2-cents, I'd definitely replace the entire 20 gallon air compressor with a new good quality compressor. And that brand would not include the letters HF!

But yes, I'm in the process of converting to battery powered tools. They're nice and much handier than air powered. They're great to use but they don't completely replace my need for air.
 Through in my 2-cents, also.

That's incredibly cheap! Why woud anyone own one of those horrible vibrating compressors?

I have a small tankless compressor that I use for a few things. It is a VIBRATING monster....and loud.

Perhaps someone who couldn't afford anything but one of those incredibly cheap compressors.

yes, those direct drive oil-less and oiled compressors are junk. the one I linked to is a belt driven compressor pump, quite different!. much lower RPM, and belt driven makes it quiet and vibration free!.

I had a cheap direct drive compressor that I tore a hole in when moving it, the handle was welded to the tank and had created a weak spot that split when I moved it, I was horrified at just how thin the metal was in those things that hold a lot of pressure.
Bought a two pot belt drive after that.
