Pburns,

Please elaborate on this technology if you can. Are you saying they might be able to send information via power lines? That's a new one on me and it does sound interesting.

Yes, it's called Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) and there are several test areas in the USA.

One major issue is that they are sending RF over the powerlines. This is causing problems with over the air radio systems using the same frequencies. This includes your Police and Fire dispatch as well as other Public Services such as Business Band etc. They are trying to "notch out" the interfearance with limited success.

They had a test going in Austria and shut it down due to unsolvable interfearance issues.

I think Paul is correct. I sent the card back and didn't scan it, but I believe the speed they talked about was 10x faster than dial-up. That's not great, but it's a heck of an improvement.

Aren't they already reading power meters this way? Hmm...

Of course, Wise County Electric Coop has had a new building and location for over a year. If you go to their website or look at the return address on your bill, they still show the old address which is now a vacant lot. That doesn't build a lot of confidence in their high-tech ability. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The noise as pointed out was and appearently is still a concern. But if (IF) they can find a frequency(s) that meets FCC None interference spec's it should work fine. I smaller scale of this. That is getting better and has been around a while is X10 devices for home automation and newer phonejack extenders and network ports over home power outlets. (plugs)...

I would not wait for it, as mentioned it is in testing... and could take years to pass.....Also I don't think they have decided where it falls under... FCC or who ever it is that regulate the power co's...

Hey, pburns, if you get up the energy, look up the spelling of Laziness...

Treed,

You might check around and see if High Speed Wireless internet is available. I used to do a lot of installations in our area and it works very well. We have great speed and reliability.

One other concern with the broadband over power lines is saftey. Sure enough some idiot somewhere is going to try and steal the service by trying to tap into the electrical outlet, or the service panel and get cooked.

U know I've been out here since about 99 and you are 1st one to either notice or bother /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. But would you believe I spelled it that way on purpose? That I just don't like the way it looks with an i.... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif although if I was going to spell it the way I would being from BAMA it would be

Laz E ness /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

or it could be i'm just to LazE to go back and fix.....it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey that wireless system being mentioned is it the Point to Point Microwave setup?
I had one beneath my cell tower antenna back in my Nextel days....
If I could have gone that way for a fair price over Dway I would have since it should not have the latency issue for us gammers....
Alas it is not close enough to me casa /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Paul,

The Wireless Internet that was mentioned is like this service in Marble Falls, TX. It costs $300 for all the equipment including installation, and the service starts at $40/mo for 256K, $50 for 512K.

Everyone that has it seems to think it's great. Marble Falls has at least 4 companies offering this type of service, and I think T-Star is the oldest. I wonder why it's so competitive in the relatively sparsely populated Hill Country, but apparently unknown in other parts of the country?
