Does anyone know if you can tell the age of a Craftsman tractor by the model number?

Thanks I tried that, trouble is that it's a Canadian model and Searspartsdirect says no such model found. My model numder starts with 944 and the US models start with 917

The first six digits of the Serial number is the date of manufacture. FYI

Does your Craftsman have a Briggs engine? If so the first two numbers of the Code on the engine is the year the engine was built, gives you a close estimate.

For example, the #'s on my old Sears LT 8:
Model: 195707
Type: 2658901-02
Code: 7785967

The 77 in the Code indicate the year 1977. Tecumseh is a little bit trickier and Im not sure about Kohler, I would have to do some research.
