Thanks all, I spent some time yesterday trying different combinations that have been suggested and found them very helpful. What was working the best for me is similar to what Skipmarcy shared in his post. With the hand throttle set in the 1500 range the hydraulics functioned properly and I still had some speed control with the foot throttle. Not sure why that wasn’t obvious to me at first, guess it was just too many years with HST trannies.

IH3444 ask why the switch which I thought was a fair question. The tractor I wanted is only offered with a gear tranny.

I don't use my foot throttle very often. For PTO work such as mowing, I set the hand throttle at PTO rpm and select the appropriate gear for the speed I want. If I'm doing a lot of FEL work, I again set the rpm to give me the loader speed I want and then use the gears to select my speed. My shuttle shift is hydraulic, so I really don't need to use a clutch much. About the only time I clutch is when I'm backing up to hook up an implement or if I'm shifting on the fly.

I use rpm to give me the power I need and the gears to give me the speed I want.
